NH DHHS - Jonathan’s Sprouts Recalled in New Hampshire Due to Salmonella Risk

Concord, NH – The NH Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) today announces that Jonathan’s alfalfa and other sprouts recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration were distributed in New Hampshire. The recall is because the sprouts may be contaminated by Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious illness.

Although no illnesses have been reported in New Hampshire, Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with a weakened immune system. Healthy persons affected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Usually symptoms resolve in 5-7 days. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and causing severe infection and arthritis.

“Salmonella can be a serious illness, especially for compromised individuals,” said Public Health Director José Montero, “so we are encouraging any New Hampshire residents who may have purchased these sprouts to not eat any that may be left. If someone has eaten from an affected container they should be watched for symptoms. Not everyone becomes ill when exposed to Salmonella, however. If you or someone you know becomes ill, seek medical attention.”
