Prescott Park 2011 Wizard of Oz Opening

The Wizard of Oz Arrives at Prescott Park on June 24th!

PORTSMOUTH, NH - Prescott Park Arts Festival, in partnership with the Seacoast Repertory Theatre, proudly presents The Wizard of Oz as the featured musical production for their 37th Annual Summer Season.  Based on the Royal Shakespeare Company's celebration of the 1939 MGM movie, this production of the greatest family musical of all time promises to sweep audiences away with its beloved songs, famed characters, and timeless storyline.  Sponsored by The Common Man Restaurant Family, The Wizard of Oz will be presented on the FairPoint Communications MainStage in Prescott Park, Portsmouth, starting on Friday, June 24th, and running each Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening until August 21st.

While most adults and children have seen, read, or sung along to The Wizard of Oz, this particular production will be the result of a unique and special partnership between Prescott Park Arts Festival and The Seacoast Repertory Theatre for the 2011 Season.  The two nonprofits have long worked side by side, but this new joint venture represents their most in-depth collaboration to date.  Co-directed by John Kimball and Craig Faulkner and produced by Ben Anderson, the show will feature Dorothy and Toto, as well as all of their Oz friends including the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow.  Audiences will follow their adventures through Munchkin Land, the Haunted Forest, and on to the Emerald City, as the friends ward off the Wicked Witch.  PPAF is proud to announce that the show will be complete with flying effects, as provided by ZFX, Inc.

Actress Christine Dulong will be performing as Dorothy Gale, the memorable role Judy Garland once brought to life. "This summer will be my first time performing at the Park and I think I'm most excited to bring Dorothy to life for all the little girls in the audience who still see the magic and wonder in the story of Oz. And Dorothy is such an iconic role that I really want to do her and Judy Garland justice."

Executive Director and Producer Ben Anderson is eagerly anticipating opening night on June 24th. "This summer will be the culmination of a great deal of hard work from our partners, cast, crew and staff, and it promises to be one of our most memorable, successful summers ever. Audiences should be prepared to fall in love with The Wizard of Oz all over again. Hearing the refrains of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' echoing through the park on summer nights is something I'm looking forward to, and I know our fantastic cast will bring the story to life for all of our audience members, young and old alike."

Since 1974, Prescott Park Arts Festival has successfully reached over 3.5 million people through more than 10,000 music, theater, dance, and art productions offered at no fixed admission. The 37th season will feature The Wizard of Oz as the festival's signature musical production, a variety of international artists including Arlo Guthrie, Shawn Colvin, and Taj Mahal, as part of The River House Restaurant Concert Series, and several music festivals.
