The Empire Strikes Back:
Planned Parenthood tries to Debunk AUL Report and momentum builds for Congressional Hearings
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Following the release of Americans United for Life’s report “The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood,” media from across the ideological spectrum took notice of the extensive AUL legal research that looks behind the closed doors of the nation’s largest abortion provider. The report is the result of years of AUL legal team research poring over more than 20 years of Planned Parenthood records, law enforcement reports, and other materials. The report details evidence of systemic financial irregularities within the abortion giant – which receives more than $363 million in taxpayer funding each year.
From the Washington Times, to Politico, US News & World Report, the American Spectator, National Review, CNS News, Heritage Foundation, writers Jill Stanek and Michael New (to name only a few), news and analysis of AUL and its report received more than 5,700 mentions in less than one week from the release. Predictions about the impact of the report went straight to Planned Parenthood’s bottom line. In World Magazine, Marvin Olasky noted that “researchers from AUL, the legal arm of the pro-life movement” may have laid the foundation for de-funding the nation’s largest abortion provider.
AUL’s report “increases the likelihood that Planned Parenthood will lose its taxpayer funding not only in Indiana but also in Texas, Kansas, New Jersey, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin,” Olasky predicted.
Talk of hearings and investigation began immediately after AUL’s report reached Capitol Hill, distributed by Americans United for Life Action after the nationwide release. Congressman Cliff Stearns (R-FL) was the first on Capitol Hill to respond on the record, noting that “the report prepared by AUL demonstrates egregious abuses of taxpayer funds by Planned Parenthood.”
He continued: “I believe my Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee should review the findings of this report and possibly hold a hearing on why taxpayers are funding Planned Parenthood with its record of abuse and violations of state laws. The American people deserve a concrete reason for funding Planned Parenthood; a reason I do not believe exits.” To read his entire statement, click here.
THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK; PLANNED PARENTHOOD RESPONDS
Faced with more than 180 pages of thoroughly documented legal analysis, spokespeople for Planned Parenthood and its abortion allies began to denounce AUL and its report. Planned Parenthood eventually produced a tepid 3-page response, leaving unaddressed most of AUL’s research detailing Planned Parenthood’s public record.

THIS WEEK, AUL renewed the call for a Congressional investigation and released an analysis and point-by-point rebuttal of Planned Parenthood’s “Fact-Check” of AUL’s report. The 16-page response further underscores the financial irregularities of interest to Congress.
Spearheading the entire effort, AUL’s Dr. Charmaine Yoest observed that hearings and investigations often proceed actual de-funding.
“By their own accounting, Planned Parenthood is spending $1 million a day in taxpayer dollars, and as the tax investment in Planned Parenthood has doubled, so has the number of abortions that they are doing,” she noted. “The American taxpayer wants out of the business of abortion, and AUL’s report fuels those efforts.”
