Governor Lynch to Proclaim October as “Safe Disposal of Medical Sharps Month”
BD and Rite Aid to Announce Safe Sharps Event as Part of Legislative Initiative
WHAT: Press Conference
WHY: Governor Lynch will proclaim October as “Safe Disposal of Medical Sharps Month”. In recognition of the proclamation, the Medical Sharps Subcommittee of the Health and Human Services Oversight Committee has collaborated with industry leaders to help educate New Hampshire residents about the proper disposal of medical sharps.
Representatives from BD (Becton Dickinson & Company) and Rite Aid will announce a cooperative arrangement to bring 3,000 free needle cutters (BD Safe-Clip™) and related educational materials to all of the 68 Rite Aid pharmacies in New Hampshire during the month of October. The cutters, provided by BD, will be distributed to Rite Aid shoppers on a first come-first serve basis.
Household generated “sharps” include hypodermic needles, syringes, pen needles and lancets. They are typically used in the home for insulin injection or for administering other medications. It is estimated that 15 million insulin syringes and pen needles are disposed of in New Hampshire each year. Household generated sharps should be disposed appropriately to help prevent injury and illness to family members and waste handlers and reduce pollution to the environment.
