Local business owner and Bedford resident Robert “Bob” Burns has announced his intention to explore running for the Executive Council seat currently held by the retiring Raymond Wieczorek. Burns is the current Hillsborough County Treasurer, a seat he won after beating incumbent Chris Pappas in 2010. Burns formerly held the position of Selectman in the 12th ward of Manchester. Burns is also the Treasurer of the Bedford Republican Committee.
He attended Bedford public schools and graduated from Manchester High School West. In 2002 he earned a degree in Business Management from Keene State College. Bob has had a lifelong interest in New Hampshire Republican politics. From an early age he attended legislative sessions in Concord with his mother, Rep. Leslie Burns, who served three terms as a New Hampshire State Representative from 1982 – 1988. Bob’s work with the 2008 Mike Huckabee presidential bid earned him an Alternate Delegate spot at the Republican Convention in St Paul MN.
He is also actively involved in the New Hampshire Young Republicans (NHYR) serving as their National Committeeman since 2008. Burns has received both National and Local Awards for his involvement with the Young Republicans. In 2010, he was presented with the Gipper Award by Congressman Paul Ryan. The Gipper Award is given each year at the Annual Convention to an outstanding NHYR who has worked hard to spread the message of Ronald Reagan..
On why he wants to run for the Executive Council Burns says, “I think it’s important for Republicans to continue the great work done by Councilor Ray Wieczorik. Councilor Wieczorik served District 4 with such strong leadership by expanding the Airport into a huge economic generator for Southern NH, bringing us the Version Wireless Arena, and standing up for life by opposing Planned Parenthood’s state contract. I believe the most important responsibilities of the Council are the confirmation of executives to head New Hampshire’s departments, judicial appointments, and the approval of state contracts. We need to ensure the next Governor of New Hampshire has the counsel of wise people who will carry on the proud New Hampshire traditions of liberty, justice, and the promotion of our unique economic advantage.”
