Concord, NH – The Bass for Congress campaign today criticized Annie Kuster for continuing her concerted effort to scare seniors with deception and outright falsehoods, this time in conjunction with Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is campaigning in New Hampshire today.
Annie Kuster has falsely claimed that Charlie Bass favors ending Medicare “as we know it,” and is traveling the state spreading that falsehood.
How do Annie Kuster’s wild claims and scare tactics stand up to reality?
Kuster Scare Tactic: Charlie Bass voted to “abolish” Medicare.
The Facts: Charlie Bass has never, and would never vote to abolish Medicare. This politically charged claim was named the Politifact “Lie of the Year” for 2011. According to the Medicare Trustees, the Medicare program, without change will go bankrupt in 2024. The only plan that would “abolish” Medicare is Annie Kuster’s failure to offer solutions to preserve Medicare and allowing the program to continue on a path that guarantees bankruptcy.
Kuster Scare Tactic: Charlie Bass wants “to end Medicare as we know it.”
The Facts: Another false scare tactic that is part of the false attack that earned the Poltifact “Lie of the Year” for 2011. Charlie Bass is the only candidate to support a bipartisan plan that will not allow Medicare to go bankrupt. Charlie Bass supported a plan that would preserve and protect Medicare indefinitely developed by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI). The plan would institute absolutely no changes for those aged 55 and over. Future beneficiaries under the age of 55 would have the option of staying with traditional Medicare, or enrolling in a premium support program to enable them to purchase a personal plan in a competitive market that would have guaranteed coverage that could not discriminate based on anything such as age or a preexisting condition.
Kuster Scare Tactic: Charlie Bass supports a plan that would raise costs for seniors by $6,400.
The Facts: Annie Kuster once again relies on a talking point from her Washington Democratic Party Leaders that have been proven to be false and misleading. Kuster continues to cite a report from the liberal think tank, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities that is based on the 2011 Ryan budget and a plan that is no longer under consideration. In addition, their calculations apply to the year 2022 and any claim that current seniors would be impacted is an outright lie. If Annie Kuster wants to cite studies, she should focus on the Medicare Trustees Report that state Medicare is bankrupt in 2024 and explain to seniors why she has no plan to save it.
Kuster Scare Tactic: Charlie Bass wants to end the Medicare guaranteed benefit.
The Facts: False. Charlie Bass knows seniors have earned their Medicare and will always fight to preserve and protect the program. The bipartisan plan he supports will allow future seniors the option of staying in traditional Medicare or choosing a personal plan that will have guaranteed coverage and benefits that future seniors expect and have earned.
Kuster Scare Tactic: “It’s all political theater.”
The Facts: Annie Kuster is correct - all of her claims are “political theater” to distract seniors from a record of supporting policies that are hurting today’s seniors and the Medicare program.
Kuster has supported over $700 billion in direct cuts to the Medicare program that will impact today’s seniors by reductions in payments to hospitals and nurses. This money was taken from Medicare to pay for the President’s new health care law.
Kuster supports putting the government in control of sensitive medical decisions that were once made between doctors and their patients by giving control to 15 unelected bureaucrats.
Kuster’s policies have already cut benefits for 7,600 New Hampshire seniors who lost their access to their Medicare Advantage plans.
Bass Campaign spokesman Scott Tranchemontagne: “The facts speak for themselves. Annie Kuster does not want seniors to know her record of supporting the $700 billion cut to Medicare, giving seniors’ medical decisions to government bureaucrats, allowing Medicare to go bankrupt and eliminating Medicare Advantage for 7,600 New Hampshire seniors. Annie Kuster is offering no solutions to the challenges facing our nation, particularly Medicare. New Hampshire seniors know that Charlie Bass is always on their side, working to protect the benefits they have earned.”
