Maggie Hassan Endorsed by Planned Parenthood for Her Record of Standing Up for Women and Families

Ovide Lamontagne Would Cut Funding for Cancer Screenings and Access to Affordable Birth Control, Restrict the Rights of Women to Make Their Own Health Care Decisions

MANCHESTER – Democratic candidate for Governor Maggie Hassan received the endorsement of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) Action Fund NH-PAC today as the only candidate for Governor who will protect access to affordable birth control and health screenings, and secure the rights of women to make their own health care decisions.

Hassan has a strong record of standing up for a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. When the legislature tried to pass a bill to allow insurance plans to drop coverage for birth control, Hassan stood up to fight the plan. She believes women, in consultation with their health care providers and partners, should control decisions about birth control and pregnancy.

Hassan strongly opposes Ovide Lamontagne and the Tea Party legislature’s policies to restrict abortion rights and defund Planned Parenthood, making basic care and important services, including cancer screenings, fertility treatments, and birth control more expensive for New Hampshire women and families.

“The distinction between Ovide Lamontagne and Maggie Hassan couldn’t be clearer,” said Jennifer Frizzell, Chair of the PPNNE Action Fund NH-PAC.   “Maggie Hassan will stand up for women’s access to life saving cancer screenings, breast exams, birth control, health information and counseling. She believes the intensely personal and often complex decision about whether to raise a child, choose adoption, or end a pregnancy rests with a woman, her family, her physician, and her faith – and not with politicians. Ovide Lamontagne, on the other hand, wants to defund Planned Parenthood and ban safe, legal abortion – even in cases of rape or incest.”

“Health care for women and families is an economic issue,” Hassan said. “The extreme policies supported by Ovide Lamontagne and this legislature would make basic care, cancer screenings, and birth control more expensive, forcing many to choose between their health and their economic well-being. Ovide Lamontagne has supported policies that would ban abortion, even for victims of rape and incest, and even outlaw some forms of birth control and fertility treatments.”

“I’m proud to have the support of Planned Parenthood and I will continue fighting to ensure all New Hampshire women and men can make their own choices when it comes to their health and the health of their families,” said Hassan.

Maggie’s opponent Ovide Lamontagne has consistently supported policies that restrict a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.  He has supported a constitutional amendment that would criminalize abortion and limit insurance coverage for birth control[i], opposed abortion rights even in the case of rape or incest[ii], and backed the defunding of Planned Parenthood, increasing the cost of critical health care services for New Hampshire women and families.[iii]
