As you know, the fight to preserve our competitive advantage over our neighboring states is an ongoing battle.
A lot of progress has been made in the past year, including:
1) State spending was reduced by 11%. It was done WITHOUT raising taxes, WITHOUT borrowing money and WITHOUT using budgeting gimmicks.
2) Small retail businesses on our state’s border saw a reduction in cigarette taxes, which helps them maintain their competitive advantage over retailers across the border.
3) Even the state’s business tax rate, ranked 50th,and the worst in the nation since 2007, improved to 46th this year.
Still, much more needs to be done.
This Wednesday, February 8, the New Hampshire House can continue in the right direction by passing HB 593, a bill to lower the tax burden on New Hampshire businesses, allowing employers to create jobs.
The bill will also permit casinos in New Hampshire. This will create thousands of jobs and bring hundreds of millions of dollars in non-taxpayer revenue to the state.
Studies have shown more than 60% of the revenue raised here would come from Massachusetts’ residents. That’s the competitive advantage New Hampshire has enjoyed for generations through retail sales, liquor sales and the state’s lottery.
If the bill fails, we will lose part of our advantage over Massachusetts - since they have moved forward with casino gambling. They will be gaining revenue, economic development and jobs from New Hampshire.
We cannot lose our competitive advantage over Massachusetts.
I urge you to call your state representatives today. Please CLICK HERE to find your legislators and their contact information.
Non-taxpayer revenue raised in a responsible manner will help alleviate the burdens on our taxpayers and small business owners. In this economy, that help is needed now more than ever.
