Plymouth, NH: The Flying Monkey Movie House and Performance Center announces its Spring Season, kicking things off with the traditional Country Rock of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on Thursday, March 15th. Known for hits like “Fishin in the Dark” and “Mr. Bojangles”, NGDB’s traditional Country Rock and Roots Music remains just as relevant today as in the 70s. Local country phenom, the Tom Dixon Band, will open the night with a special acoustic set of original music. Tickets for this show start at $39.
Forty-five years after they formed in California in 1966, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band remains one of the most active and influential bands of its era. Pioneers of the country-rock movement, the band laid the groundwork for a generation of country rockers from the Eagles to Alabama. The NGDB’s resume includes multi-platinum and gold records and a string of top ten hits including "Fishin' In The Dark" and "Mr. Bojangles," as well as multiple Grammy, IBMA and CMA awards and nominations. Their groundbreaking 1972 LP "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," a three-LP set re-introduced country legends like Doc Watson, Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs and Mother Maybelle Carter to a broader audience.
In the early ‘80s, the band returned to Nashville for a successful career in mainstream country music charting a decade of hits including “Dance Little Jean,” "Workin' Man" and "Long Hard Road.” In 1989, the group recorded “Circle II,” tapping Johnny Cash, EmmyLou Harris, Levon Helm, Chet Atkins, Bruce Hornsby, John Hiatt and Roseanne Cash. “Circle II” earned three Grammys and the CMA’s “Album of the Year.” In 2002, “Circle III” took home the IBMA’s “Recorded Event of the Year award” and led to a 2005 Grammy for “Country Instrumental Performance.”
