Leo Kottke: June 1
Leo Kottke draws on not just folk, but also blues and jazz music in his original, finger-picking acoustic style on both six and twelve-string guitars. He entertains his audiences with his musical virtuoso and incredible humor. After four decades of recording and touring, Kottke has earned a legendary status in the music world. Most anyone who has played an acoustic guitar has heard of him. He may never have a #1 hit on commercial radio, but millions of people world-wide have bought Kottke's records and, as one critic remarked, ?think he's the cats pajamas."
Don McLean: June 9
Many of us can remember growing up with and singing along to his hits, and any aspiring singer songwriter can attest to learning how to play his songs on guitar and being influenced by his moving lyrics. Don Mclean is one of America's most enduring singer-songwriters and is forever associated with his classic hits "American Pie" and "Vincent (Starry Starry Night)". Since first hitting the charts in 1971, Don has amassed over 40 gold and platinum records world-wide and, in 2004, was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.
David Bromberg Quartet w/ special guest Occidental Gypsy: June 15
A singular performer/writer/arranger, David Bromberg's remarkable musical versatility and innovative resourcefulness have earned vast critical and popular acclaim. He is also impossible to classify. As one critic perceptively wrote, ?He is part of everything contemporarily musical? a product of blues, country, jazz, folk, and classical music. >From his early success as a guitar virtuoso, Mr. Bromberg has developed into a brilliant entertainer."
Occidental Gypsy is pioneering the sound of Gypsy Pop. Their combination of up-tempo, high-energy rhythms of Gypsy music, melded with the catchy hooks of Pop music delivers a thrilling experience to listeners. In many ways the heart of Gypsy Pop embodies the essence and spirit of what jazz was in its infancy: developing, improvising, and arranging, with contemporary music as a foundation.
Interestingly, Gypsy Swing was created by taking American Jazz to the East and blending it with the Gypsy Folk tradition. Now almost a century later Occidental Gypsy is bringing the music back home.
