CONCORD –House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt (R-Salem) today commented on the news of the governor’s nomination of Attorney Jim Bassett to the state Supreme Court and the reappointment of Linda Hodgdon as Commissioner of the Department of Administrative Services.
Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt
“While Attorney Bassett has an impressive resume, it is somewhat concerning that Governor Lynch, in lame-duck status, would elevate an individual with no judicial experience to serve for the next 15 years on our State’s highest court. We hope that if the Executive Council allows this nomination to move forward they will ensure this nominee brings balance to the court by bringing an Originalist or New Textualist philosophy. The executive council should think carefully about appointing any major positions for a lame-duck governor and should seriously consider holding off on these major appointments until a new Governor takes office next year.”
