CONCORD - Raymond Buckley, Chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, released the following statement after Senator Kelly Ayotte's vote to double the interest rates on subsidized student loans:
"Kelly Ayotte stood in lock-step with her Tea Party allies and voted against the interests of thousands of students across New Hampshire today. By filibustering this legislation and blocking debate on the bill, Kelly Ayotte is making it harder for students in New Hampshire and across the country to gain the skills they need to compete for and succeed in the jobs of today and tomorrow.
"By voting to block debate on this important bill - Kelly Ayotte essentially voted to let interest rates double on student loans from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on July 1. This will cause at least 7 million students to be hit with an average of more than $1,000 in additional costs over the life of that loan. Such a hike would have a devastating effect on many New Hampshire students' ability to afford a college education.
"Kelly Ayotte should be looking out for the interests of New Hampshire students and families. Instead, Kelly Ayotte is focused on pleasing the Tea Party crowd and auditioning to be a vice presidential candidate."
