Critically acclaimed 10,000 Maniacs to play the Flying Monkey on June 17th.
Plymouth, NH. The Flying Monkey Performance Center is excited to present 90 Alt Rock Supergroup 10,000 Maniacs. Known as one of the fist “Indie” bands they elicit memories of hits like “These are the Days”, “Because the Night”, and “More Than This.” The new band, led by Mary Ramsey, has taken a new direction to much success and critical acclaim. Local favorites Uncle Steve band will open the night. Tickets for this concert start at $39.
One of the most critically acclaimed bands of the last three decades, 10,000 Maniacs is widely considered one of the original "indie" bands and a pioneer of the alternative rock genre, and vaulted lead singer Natalie Merchant to stardom. Their MTV Unplugged album, released in 1993, went 3x Platinum. Together with artists like R.E.M., they defined college rock and created the first wave of alternative rock bands and what became known as the alternative rock format on FM radio.
Writing and performing powerful, danceable, and socially conscious original material in and around their hometown of Jamestown, New York, the group toured extensively through the early 90s and produced two independently released records. 1993 began with the Maniacs memorable performance at Bill Clinton's MTV Inaugural Ball where host Dennis Miller famously referred to them as "Chelsea Clinton's favorite band." MTV Unplugged was released in October '93 (a few months after Merchant's departure), featuring a remake of the classic "Because the Night." The record sold 4 million copies. The new lineup with Mary Ramsey released Love Among the Ruins, featuring a cover of Roxy Music's "More Than This," which went to #24 on the Billboard charts, the highest-charting single in the band's history.
The new Lineup marks a mixing of old and new for the Maniacs. Expect to hear all the Merchant Era Hits that we all know and love, as well as the new material that has Ramsey’s stamp on it and a new direction and sound one critic described as “Perfect post-punk Celtic Folk Rock.”
Local favorites Uncle Steve Band will open the night with a rich mix of rock, pop, and R&B from their six piece family band. Known for masterful rhythm, family musicianship, bluesy harmonica solos and soulful and sultry singing they are sure to entertain and take the crowd on a musical journey.
