Gloves off - Candidates for governor debate at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge
By Nick B. Reid
“The two major Republican candidates for governor of New Hampshire butted heads at Franklin Pierce University in their second debate in as many days Thursday afternoon. Locals who went to the debate said it’s too early to come to any conclusions, but maintained that Kevin Smith, the younger of the two by 20 years, showed an edge that his opponent, Ovide Lamontagne, lacked.”…
“State Rep. Frank Sterling, a Jaffrey Republican, said both candidates were interesting, with well-presented, good ideas. ‘As far as being a Republican, I think we have a couple of good candidates. I could support either one when it comes to it,’ he said. Sterling said Lamontagne is ‘an establishment, been-around guy,’ while Smith ‘has some more energy’ with ‘a little more dynamic elements to him.’”…
“…Keith Halloran of Rindge said that Smith seems to have the momentum to move forward…He said Lamontagne is ‘a nice man’ and principled, but that he represents the status quo.”…
“’The state’s infrastructure is deteriorating and improvements are essential to the welfare of the state’s economy,’ [Don MacIsaac] wrote. ‘In my judgment, Kevin Smith seemed to recognize the need and priority.’”
Also this week, the former Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party, Wayne Semprini, penned an op-ed for the New Hampshire Union Leader, which highlighted Kevin Smith’s brand of bold, new leadership that is needed today more than ever in the corner office.

Another View: Kevin Smith is the fresh, new leader NH Republicans need
By Wayne Semprini
New Hampshire Union Leader
“New Hampshire’s primary voters have an exceptional opportunity to propel another young, dynamic and energetic leader to the forefront. We can elect a governor with bold ideas, who is articulate and persuasive enough to make them a reality. That leader is Kevin Smith.” …
“Kevin Smith is the candidate Republicans can enthusiastically stand behind. He has a plan to fix the problems of government, grow our economy, lower our taxes and put people back to work. Kevin won’t be afraid to pick up the phone and convince new and expanding companies to come to New Hampshire and to assure them it is once again the most business-friendly state in America.”
“It is neither safe nor prudent to elect a candidate simply because it’s his turn. Real leadership doesn’t wait. Real leaders, like Kevin Smith, make it their turn, focus on the needs of citizens, develop a viable plan to address the issues and, through conviction, implement it. Kevin is the type of leader who will get results by clearing the way for more jobs for our children and a healthier economic environment for all.”
