Washington, DC – (7/27/12) – Generation Opportunity President Paul T. Conway, former Chief of Staff of the US Department of Labor and the US Office of Personnel Management, participated in a panel discussion on the impact of the Millennial generation on the 2012 elections. Alongside Rock the Vote’s Heather Smith, he talked about the issues most important to 18-29 year old voters and emphasized the central role of the economy and the lack of full-time, meaningful employment as the central issue in 2012 for young Americans. The event, titled The Young and the Restless: Millennials in the 2012 election,” was hosted by the American Enterprise Institute.

Conway addressed the young adult unemployment rate – currently at 12.8% – as well as the human impact on Millennials – based on the perspective of the hundreds of thousands of young adults engaged by Generation Opportunity's field staff on the ground in states across the nation, as well as the over 3.4 million young people with whom Generation Opportunity connects on Facebook every day.

Earlier this month, Generation Opportunity released data that indicated that young adults ages 18-29 faced a 12.8% non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) unemployment rate for June. The rate would be 16.8% (NSA) if one were to factor in the 1.7 million young adults who have given up looking for work because of the poor economy.

The panel with Paul T. Conway of Generation Opportunity and Heather Smith of Rock the Vote starts at the 45:30 mark:
