Concord - House Republican Leader Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett) released the following statement following the approval of the majority recommendation of the Medicaid Expansion Commission:
House Republican Leader Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett)
“The Governor and House Democrats’ original plan was to open the floodgates and get as many people on to this taxpayer funded government insurance program as possible. This did not take into account the possible long term costs New Hampshire taxpayers could face. I’m happy to see there were at least some concessions made by the pro-expansion commissioners. The departure from the original proposal is considerable but not necessarily redeeming."
“The commission recommendation is not legislation. In the end, we all want to find a solution that will allow us to provide access to affordable healthcare for our low income citizens. What we don’t want is an income or sales tax if Medicaid costs become unmanageable. As the process moves forward to the legislature, we will continue to offer solutions that minimize taxpayers' exposure to unfunded mandates and maximize use of private insurance options."
