Congresswoman Shea-Porter Cosponsors the Free File Program Act

Takes Action to Help Middle Class Families During Tax Season

Washington, DC Today, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter announced she is a cosponsor the Free File Program Act.  This bi-partisan bill would make the current Free File Alliance program permanent under US law.  The Free File Alliance was formed several years ago between the IRS, tax software companies, and other firms to give low to moderate income Americans an opportunity to file their taxes for free.

Now, Americans making below $57,000 a year, or those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, are able to file their taxes for free using commonly available online tax software.  Because the Free File Alliance is a voluntary program though, it could potentially be ended by the participating organizations at any point.  The Free File Program Act would correct this by legally establishing the program on a permanent basis.

Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter said: “I’m happy to cosponsor the Free File Program Act because it’s a helpful and free tool for Americans to use to prepare their taxes.”

Free File not only helps taxpayers get more from their refund, it also saves money for the US Government.  Free File has already saved the IRS more than $100 million in processing costs, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
