Governor Hassan to Host Stay Work Play NH Board Meeting, Hold Signing Ceremony for Bill Naming Whitefield Bridge After Burns Family

Office of New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan

CONCORD – TOMORROW, Governor Maggie Hassan will host a meeting of the board of directors of the nonprofit group Stay Work Play NH where she will discuss how her balanced budget proposal’s focus on innovation and workforce development will help keep New Hampshire’s young people in the state. The Governor’s proposal substantially restores cuts to public universities and colleges in exchange for a tuition freeze.

Stay Work Play was established in 2009 to further the University System of New Hampshire’s 55% Initiative to keep more than half of their graduates in state and to advance several recommendations made by the Governor’s Task Force for the Retention of Young Workers. The group brings together businesses, academia, nonprofits and the public sector to support ongoing economic, workforce, and community development by promoting the state as a favorable place for young workers and recent college graduates to stay, work and play, when considering employment and lifestyle opportunities.

Later, the Governor will hold a signing ceremony for Senate Bill 115, which names the bridge over Johns River on route 3 and route 116 in Whitefield the Burns Bridge. The bridge’s namesakes, the Burns family, have been prominent in Whitefield since Major John Burns, who served in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, was one of the town’s original organizers. Former House Speaker and current Town Moderator Harold Burns represents the sixth generation of the family in Whitefield. The bill received widespread bipartisan support from both the House and Senate, being led by Senator Jeff Woodburn and House Minority Leader Gene Chandler, as well as Representatives Leon Rideout, Herbert Richardson, and Ralph Doolan.
