Request In Response To Hassan's Inability To Answer Basic Questions About Allegations Of "Inappropriate Lobbying"

Concord - New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Jennifer Horn sent the following Right to Know request to Governor Hassan after she refused to answer basic questions yesterday about her administration's casino lobbying efforts. The Huffington Post (3/14/13) and Concord Patch (3/13/13) reported that she refused to answer questions about allegations of "inappropriate lobbying" by her administration. The Honorable Maggie Hassan

Governor of New Hampshire

State House

107 North Main Street

Concord, New Hampshire 03301

Dear Governor Hassan,

This is a request under the New Hampshire Right To Know Law (RSA 91-A.)

I formally request that you provide me with all records from your office regarding any attempt made by you or your staff to compel the New Hampshire Lottery Commission to lobby legislators to support casino gambling. This includes any written or electronic communications from you and your staff.

The Concord Patch reported that during a press availability at the State House yesterday, you were questioned about "whether or not there has been 'inappropriate lobbying' by the New Hampshire Lottery commissioner." The Patch also reported, "over a period of about 45 seconds, Josh Rogers of NHPR continued to ask Hassan to comment but she refused to answer the question directly."

The video of you stumbling, stonewalling and deliberately refusing to answer questions about allegations that you asked Executive Branch officials to engage in 'inappropriate lobbying' is stunning. Your disgraceful lack of candor and forthrightness raises very serious questions about an unwillingness to be open and transparent about the actions of your Administration. I understand that you are under enormous pressure to hold up the fiscally irresponsible house of cards that you have built with $80 million in illegal and non-existent gambling revenue. But that is no excuse for your inability to give a simple and honest answer to questions about allegations that your administration engaged in 'inappropriate lobbying."

Pursuant to the guiding statutes, please respond to this request within five (5) days of receipt. If you deny any or this entire request, please cite each specific exemption you feel justifies the refusal to release the information and notify me of appeal procedures available to me under the law.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Jennifer Horn
