CONCORD – Today House Republican Leader Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett) offered the following statement in reaction to the passage of SB143, a bill that would provide unemployment compensation to and loosen reporting requirements for certain people attempting to start their own business. The bill passed 183-149.
House Republican Leader Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett)
“We believe helping people succeed is a good thing, but there are a number of problems with this legislation. SB143 makes what some would consider unfair exceptions for a small set of people, including giving benefits to someone without asking them to prove they are continuing to look for work, or allowing them to collect benefits while being able to earn unlimited income through their start-up business. Unemployment compensation is there as a safety net. This bill provides many opportunities for people to take advantage of the system and could provide unfair competition to existing businesses.”
