CEI's Labor Project Launches Educational Campaign in Chattanooga About United Auto Workers Union

CEI Senior Fellow and Labor Project Director Matt Patterson has begun a summer-long campaign to educate business leaders, politicians, and concerned citizens about the history, tactics and legacy of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.

CEI will be working with local free-market activists, including representatives from the Tea Party and Students for Liberty, to distribute materials, such as flyers and pamphlets, detailing the negative economic consequences of UAW representation. The team designed a large billboard on a prominent Chattanooga highway reading “Auto Unions ATE Detroit. Next Meal Chattanooga?” which will be up through August.  > Read more

CEI, Independence Institute Announce Opposition to Obama’s FERC Pick

Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) and the Colorado-based Independence Institute today announced their strong opposition to President Obama’s choice of Ron Binz to head the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Openmarket.org: Another Federal Appeals Court Rules against Obama Administration’s Contraceptive Mandate

The Obama administration [imposed] a contraceptive mandate on employee health insurance, requiring even religious employers (with the exception of churches) to provide them. HHS Secretary Sebelius admits that she did not even seek a legal opinion about the legality of this mandate before imposing it, even though many legal scholars have since criticized it, and it created a political firestorm in 2012.

Now, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals has revived a legal challenge to the contraceptive mandate, ruling in favor of an appeal by the religious employer Hobby Lobby. The court ruled that Hobby Lobby has shown that it will likely succeed on its challenge to the mandate under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and is probably entitled to a preliminary injunction against it. > Read more
