MANCHESTER, N.H. —A second Republican candidate for major office is calling the state's economic development commissioner Jeff Rose, a fellow Republican names, but the latest says it is nothing personal.

Republican Executive Council candidate Bob Burns, of Bedford, said by calling Rose a "political hack" on a public access cable show he wasn't attacking him personally, but pointing that it was a "weird appointment" from Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan.

"This is nothing personal against Rose, unlike what Walt [Havenstein] did," said Burns. "I just don't know why Hassan would pick a defense lobbyist to lead the state's economic development efforts."

Earlier this year Havenstein was recorded on hidden audio saying to a local Republican committee saying that Rose, who once worked for Havenstein at BAE Systems, didn't know economic development more than "the man on the moon."

Burns also said on the cable access show that he thought Planned Parenthood was "handing out birth control like candy."

Burns faces a rematch with Democratic incumbent Chris Pappas for the Manchester-based council seat.
