Shaheen's Panicked ObamaCare Letter Reveals a Desperate & Confused Senator Willing to Say Anything to Keep Her Job
Despite voting with Obama a remarkable 99% of the time, Democrat Jeanne Shaheen is trying to distance herself from ObamaCare - a law that she was the deciding vote for. Now that her Granite State constituents are feeling the pain of the controversial law, Shaheen is finally conceding that she knew the very law she championed has raised health care costs and forced many to lose doctors and plans that they liked.
A letter authored by Shaheen and many of her fellow ObamaCare supporters admits that, “we believe that an individual whose 2013 plan was canceled and considers their new premium unaffordable should qualify for a temporary ‘hardship exemption.’” In an unprecedented overnight response, Secretary Sebelius clarified this exemption in an obvious effort to provide cover for Jeanne Shaheen and other endangered Senators on the ballot in 2014.
Sebelius wrote: “We understand, however, that despite all these efforts, there still may be a small number of consumers who are not able to renew their existing plans" [translation: lied about being able to keep your plan/doctor] "and are having difficulty finding an acceptable replacement in the Marketplace." [translation: ObamaCare offers plans that are more expensive/unaffordable]
But according to the Wall Street Journal "amid the post-rollout political backlash, last week the agency created a new category: Now all you need to do is fill out a form attesting that your plan was cancelled and that you 'believe that the plan options available in the [ObamaCare] Marketplace in your area are more expensive than your cancelled health insurance policy' or 'you consider other available policies unaffordable.'"
Then last week, Sebelius admitted in a congressional committee hearing that this exemption was accurate. The WSJ detailed: "HHS did expand eligibility for this special category of coverage otherwise designed for people under 30 to those who declare a hardship, regardless of age, in response to a plea from Virginia Senator Mark Warner and five other endangered Democratic colleagues… The truth is that the White House is trying to shield Democrats in advance from the millions of angry voters who will be penalized for not buying into ObamaCare. Such raw politics helps explain why Ms. Sebelius won't be 'accurate' about relaxing enforcement of the individual mandate."
Ultimately, Jeanne Shaheen's letter is the latest evidence that she was confused about what the health care law that she championed actually did. Now that people have started losing their doctors, health plans, and have seen costs increase, Shaheen is flailing and willing to say anything to keep her job.
It is important to remember that on multiple occasions, Shaheen refused to delay this very mandate. Apparently things change in an election year.
"Jeanne Shaheen has ignored warnings about ObamaCare for years, but now in an election year she's suddenly recognizing the disastrous effects that the law has had in her home state," said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen. “New Hampshire voters know that Jeanne Shaheen and President Obama have repeatedly deceived them about ObamaCare. After all of the lies and broken promises, it's clear that Granite Staters can no longer trust Jeanne Shaheen when it comes to health care and other important issues that affect their families, friends and co-workers."
