Citizens For A Strong NH - Web Video: Shea-Porter should stop hiding and stop lying

Untruthfully uses New Hampshire veterans as an excuse to ban video cameras from a public event

(May 7, 2014) - Since being sworn into office last year, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) has made every attempt to hide from her constituents - particularly those who might disagree with her. However, she still tries to convince the media that she is an open and accessible congresswoman. That is far from the truth.

While Granite Staters are becoming used to Rep. Shea-Porter hiding from them, what happened last Friday in Conway at a veterans event was a new low even for the congresswoman.

The discussion, which was held at a local American Legion hall, was billed as a public event.  In the video, as we have seen in the past, Rep. Shea-Porter's staff banned video cameras from constituents, but allowed the media to attend and report.  The 'no video taping' rule was first relayed to us by a Granite State veteran leader who said it was her staff who implemented the ban. However, when we asked Rep. Shea-Porter's District Director about it, shockingly, he blamed the American Legion's policy.

It is important to note that while this is the first time Rep. Shea-Porter has used Granite State veterans as an excuse to hide from her constituents at taxpayer-funded public events, there are other instances, like this one, where she has banned the public from filming.

Derek Dufresne, spokesman for Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire, released the following statement:

"Regardless of their varying positions on the issues, Granite Staters pride themselves on being represented with openness and accessibility. Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, who refuses to hold truly public forums, has failed that test time and time again. They also expect their elected officials to govern with honesty and integrity. After seeing the actions of her staff in this video, sadly, she has failed to meet that requirement as well.

"We continue to call on Congresswoman Shea-Porter to stop hiding from New Hampshire residents, but at the very least, stop lying to them. Stop using your constituents, particularly veterans, as an excuse to hide yourself from those whom you are expected to represent.  New Hampshire deserves better than that."
