Election Year Politics/Legislating:
Democrats Cancel ObamaCare Votes to Protect Jeanne Shaheen
When asked if she would run on ObamaCare, Jeanne Shaheen declared "absolutely." But this week, in the midst of an election year, Democrats revealed their strategy for ObamaCare: ignore and avoid at all cost.
The Associated Press reports, "The chairwoman of the Senate committee responsible for a bill funding implementation of 'Obamacare' has canceled a vote on the measure after Republicans signaled they would force a series of politically painful votes on endangered committee Democrats. ...The measure in question is a $158 billion measure funding the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. The bill's author, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, had said Tuesday that the Appropriations Committee would debate and approve the measure on Thursday. But the session was never scheduled by Mikulski, whose spokesman said the schedule was "under review.'" Let's not forget Jeanne Shaheen.
Multiple reports make clear that Democrats realize how increasingly unpopular ObamaCare is with voters - particularly in New Hampshire. “The move by Maryland Democrat Barbara Mikulski came after several Democrats expressed reservations about voting on amendments related to so-called Obamacare. ...Several Appropriations Democrats, including Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Mark Begich of Alaska, are at risk of losing re-election bids this fall."
Yet Jeanne Shaheen voted on the exact same amendments last year that she's now avoiding to take:
- In July 2013, Jeanne Shaheen Voted Against An Amendment To Bar The IRS From Enforcing Or Collecting Penalties Through The ObamaCare Employer Mandate Based On A 30 Hour Work Week. “S. Collins, R-Maine – Amendment that would bar the use of funds in the bill for the IRS to enforce or collect penalties through the 2010 health care overhaul’s employer mandate, which will require workplaces to provide coverage for employees who work a minimum of 30 hours per week.” (S. 1371: Rejected 14-16: R 14-0; D 0-16, 7/25/13).
- In July 2013, Jeanne Shaheen Voted Against An Amendment To Bar Funding To Implement Or Enforce ObamaCare’s Employer Mandate. “Jerry Moran, R-Kan. – Amendment that would prohibit the use of funds under the bill for implementation or enforcement of the employer mandate provision of the 2010 health care overhaul law. The employer mandate requires that most employers offer health insurance.” (S. 1284: Rejected 14-16: R 14-0; D 0-16, 7/11/13).
- In July 2013, Jeanne Shaheen Voted Against An Amendment To Bar Funding To Implement Or Enforce ObamaCare’s Individual Mandate. “Jerry Moran, R-Kan. – Amendment that would prohibit the use of funds under the bill for implementation or enforcement of the individual mandate provision of the 2010 health care overhaul law. The individual mandate requires most Americans to maintain health coverage or pay a penalty.” (S. 1284: Rejected 14-16: R 14-0; D 0-16, 7/11/13).
Why are Democrats and Jeanne Shaheen afraid to vote?
"Jeanne Shaheen promised Granite Staters that ObamaCare would reduce health care costs for families, seniors and small businesses and it turns out that was false," said NRSC Press Secretary Brook Hougesen. "If Jeanne Shaheen really wants to 'fix' ObamaCare as she claims, she'll demand a hearing on this measure. Granite Staters are looking for a leader who keeps their word and is willing to make tough decisions, not someone like Jeanne Shaheen who breaks promises and hides from their responsibilities in an election year."
