NH DHHS - New Hampshire Foster Youth Convene For Independent Living Conference

Step Up into The Future: There is an App for That

Manchester, NH – More than 100 youth will gather tomorrow, Thursday, August

7th for the 10th Annual New Hampshire Department of Health and Human

Services (DHHS), Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) Teen

Conference. The daylong conference is designed for youth ages 14 -23

currently or formerly in state care. This year’s keynote presentation and

workshops will be provided by FosterClub, an Oregon based organization,

founded on the belief that youth who have successfully transitioned from

foster care to responsible young adulthood are best suited to impact the

transition of their younger peers. FosterClub presented at the first

annual DCYF Teen Conference in 2005 and a new team of All-Stars between the

ages of 18-24 will be returning to New Hampshire to help celebrate the 10th

anniversary event. The University of New Hampshire Center for Professional

Excellence in Child Welfare (UNH CPE) will coordinate with FosterClub to

provide youth attendees with lessons and information on how to obtain a

college degree or educational certificate, finding permanency, earning and

budgeting money, being a self-advocate, self-awareness and avoiding

dangerous relationships. FosterClub will also present their signature

event, Independence City, a “life on your own” simulation game designed to

teach young people how to access community resources to help overcome

obstacles they will encounter as they transition into adulthood. DCYF

Director Maggie Bishop will speak at the Conference. Youth M.O.V.E. New

Hampshire will sponsor an open mic activity where youth are given the

chance to display their singing and other vocal talents. The day will also

include key resources to assist youth in foster care, games, prizes, and an

awards ceremony honoring youth and adults for their positive impact on

youth in foster care.

The conference begins at 8:30 AM at Manchester Community College.
