NH Senate Republican Majority - Sen. Carson Statement on Veto of Juvenile Justice Bill

The New Hampshire Senate

Republican Majority Office

Concord, NH – Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Sharon Carson (R-Londonderry) issued the following statement following the Senate’s vote to sustain Governor Maggie Hassan’s veto of SB 391:

“It’s disappointing that the Governor has chosen the status quo for New Hampshire’s Juvenile Justice System. The Sununu Youth Services Center is being mismanaged, leaving the community and the children in its care in danger. SB 391 would have restored accountability to that agency by putting the Sununu Center directly under the control of the Director of Juvenile Justice Services.

“The Juvenile Justice Advisory Board has been dormant for years, and Governor Hassan has refused to appoint members to it. Instead, she promises an Executive Order to rewrite the existing statute. Governor Hassan lacks authority to rewrite this law through an Executive Order.”
