ALG - House freshman class asserts Congress' Article One constitutional prerogatives

Dec. 10, 2015, Fairfax, Va.—Americans forLimited Government President Rick Manning today issued the following statementpraising U.S. Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) and the freshman class of the 114thHouse of Representatives for establishingthe Article One project as a priority to reassert Congress' constitutional prerogatives, including the power of the purse:

"Reasserting Congress' constitutional prerogativesincluding the power of the purse has been a long-held belief by Americans forLimited Government and today the Representative Ken Buck-led House Republicanfreshman class affirmed that principle by establishing an Article One projectas a class priority.

"It is noteworthy that the newest Housemembers have taken this step after spending their first year watching how theHouse of Representatives has failed to jealously guard its constitutional powerof the purse against usurpation by the Senate and the Executive Branch. It isencouraging that they are taking this first step toward using their collectivevoices on this issue that is critical to the future of representativedemocracy.

"Representative Ken Buck, the freshmanclass president, deserves praise for his efforts to lead the freshman class inthis action. Notably, Buck penned aletter earlier this week signed by about 11 of his colleagues urging thedefunding of a number of President Obama's most egregious initiatives.  Itis this kind of thoughtful, aggressive foresight on how Congress can rein inthe President's pen and phone that I hope will be on display through Buck's newfreshman class project."
