Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) Says, “I Don't Think We Should Have Ever Attached These Issues To DHS Funding,” Calls For Vote On “Clean” DHS Funding Bill
Concord, N.H. – New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley called on Kelly Ayotte to listen to her Senate Republican colleague Mark Kirk of Illinois, who finally conceded that it’s time for Republicans to put politics aside and fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Senator Kirk (R-IL) yesterday admitted, “I don't think we should have ever attached [immigration] issues to DHS funding,” as he called on Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to allow a vote on a bill that funds DHS without any unrelated policy riders.
“Kelly Ayotte is putting New Hampshire communities and our national security at risk by holding funding for homeland security hostage in order to appease her Tea Party base so she can stay in the Veepstakes,” said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley.
“Homeland Security secretaries of both parties, a nonpartisan coalition of mayors, New Hampshire first responders, and now even Ayotte’s own Republican colleague in the Senate have all warned against the dangers of playing politics with our national security,” added Buckley.
“It’s time for Kelly Ayotte and her fellow Tea Party Republicans to get out of the way so the Senate can pass a clean bill that will help protect our nation and secure our borders,” Buckley concluded.
