NHDP - McCain, Corker Join Calls for Clean DHS Funding Bill As Kelly Ayotte Plays Politics with National Security

Senator McCain: "There are ways we can address what the President did […] but it's not through shutting down the Department of Homeland Security."

Senator Corker: "I'll be the first to say when we have a department whose mission is to protect the homeland especially in these times, we need to fund it.”

Concord, N.H. – New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley renewed calls for Kelly Ayotte to listen to her own Senate Republican colleagues, including Senators John McCain and Bob Corker, who finally conceded that it’s time for Republicans to put politics aside and fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

John McCain told NBC’s Meet the Press, "There are ways we can address what the President did […] but it's not through shutting down the Department of Homeland Security. It's too serious."

While another of Ayotte’s Republican senate colleagues, Bob Corker, told CBS’s Face the Nation, "I'll be the first to say when we have a department whose mission is to protect the homeland especially in these times, we need to fund it […] It needs to be funded, we do not need to leave our nation in a situation with the type of threats that we have with an agency that's not working at full steam. It needs to be resolved and I think it will be."

“Kelly Ayotte doesn’t even have the support of her own Senate Republican colleagues, including John McCain, as she continues holding funding for homeland security hostage in order to appease her Tea Party base,” said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley.

“It’s only a matter of time before Kelly Ayotte is finally forced to listen to the calls from Senate Republicans, Homeland Security secretaries of both parties, a nonpartisan coalition of mayors, and New Hampshire first responders who have all warned against the dangers of playing politics with our national security,” added Buckley.

“Kelly Ayotte needs to stop worrying about staying in the Veepstakes and finally support a clean DHS funding bill that will help protect our nation and secure our borders,” Buckley concluded.
