NHDP - Governor Hassan Stands Up For Law Enforcement & Public Safety

NHGOP’s Radical Gun Bill Wildly Out-Of-Step With New Hampshire

Concord, N.H. – After New Hampshire House Republicans passed a radical bill allowing anyone to carry a concealed weapon without a license, New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley thanked Governor Hassan for standing up for law enforcement and public safety.
“Once again, Republicans in the New Hampshire House and Senate have proven that they’re wildly out-of-step with New Hampshire, passing a radical gun bill over the opposition of law enforcement officers and 71% of Granite Staters,” said New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley. “We thank Governor Hassan for taking a strong stand to support law enforcement and public safety by pledging to veto this radical bill.”
A recent poll from PPP found that 71% of Granite Staters oppose the far-right gun bill, while only 23% support it.
The measure is not only opposed by the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police, but has also been opposed by several prominent New Hampshire Republicans, including then-Senator Ted Gatsas, who voted against SB 454, a comparable 2004 bill.
The Concord Monitor also reported that Merrimack County Sheriff Scott Hilliard, a Republican who endorsed Mitt Romney and canoed with Scott Brown, spoke out in favor of keeping the current licensing process. Hilliard said, “The word suitable, it does seem somewhat ambiguous, but it gives some latitude we should respect… The statute for approving them is clear.”
