Young Professionals Meet Manchester's Leaders

Manchester Young Professionals Network And Greater Manchester Chamber Of Commerce Partner To Pair Local Business Leaders With The City’s Young Professionals

CEOs will host young professionals in inaugural event

Manchester, N.H. – In a unique first-of-its-kind event, the Manchester Young Professionals Network (MYPN) and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) have partnered to produce Seat @ the Table, an exclusive event designed to allow young professionals just that: a seat at the table of local business owners, leaders, CEOs and presidents and access to the insights, wisdom and lessons only experienced business leaders can provide.

The event, made up of a dozen smaller roundtables, is set for Thursday, May 22, 2008. Fourteen participating leaders will host 10-15 young professionals at a location of their choice, holding a roundtable discussion. The conversations will be dynamic, offering leaders a chance to impart knowledge and experience to a group of eager young professionals.

“This event is brand new and one that we believe our membership will wholeheartedly embrace,” said Kate Benway, chairman of the MYPN, an organization boasting 2,700 members between the ages of 20 and 40. “Young professionals across the board are acutely interested in mentorship, opportunities for personal and professional growth and development and in making connections with today’s business leaders and learning from them. Often, young professionals seek advice about navigating difficult workplace situations, rising to management, business acumen and other circumstances that traditionally require hands-on experiential training. In this case, our leaders will offer insights that might help young professionals more easily navigate challenging professional and personal scenarios. Ultimately, our young professionals are future business, community and state leaders and we are proud to pair them with the leaders of today.”

Local business leaders participating in Seat @ the Table include: Rick Brenner, President and General Manager, New Hampshire Fisher Cats; Scott Christensen, Manager Partner, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network; Susan Duprey, Shareholder, Devine Millimet; Jeff Eisenberg, President, Manchester Monarchs Hockey Club; Raymond Garon, President and General Manager, WZID and WFEA; Mayor Frank Guinta, City of Manchester; Gary Hirshberg , President, Stonyfield Farm, Inc.; Dr. Paul LeBlanc, President, Southern New Hampshire University; Gary Long, President and COO, Public Service of New Hampshire; Sean Owen , President, wedu and owner, Printer’s Square; Alyson Pitman Giles, CEO and President, Catholic Medical Center; Joseph Reilly, President and CEO, Centrix Bank; Cathleen Schmidt, President, Citizens Bank; Nick Soggu, President, SilverTech.

“We have had an overwhelming response from our local business community,” said Robin Comstock, President and CEO, of the GMCC. “These leaders are enthused about this event and the prospect of connecting with and offering insight, advice and wisdom to Manchester’s young professionals. This kind of event is at the very core of the Chamber’s mission, which is to empower local business and strengthen our business community. There is no doubt that both young professional and executive-level leader will be enriched through this experience.”

Just as corporate leaders readily agreed to participate, three corporate sponsors joined the ranks. Bellwether Credit Union, will provide top sponsorship of the program, while Public Service of New Hampshire and Northwestern Mutual Finance Network will round out the second tier of sponsorship.

“Manchester’s young professionals are the up and coming workforce, managers and leaders of our businesses and community and it makes perfect sense to connect them with the people who are currently paving the way,” said Mike L’Ecuyer, President of Bellwether Credit Union, and lead sponsor of the event. “There is a coming together of this community that’s represented by this event and it will undoubtedly be transformative for Manchester. We’re so pleased to be part of it.”

Participation in the event is offered exclusively to MYPN members and costs $25. MYPN members will be matched to their leaders of choice on a first-come, first-served basis. To register to become a MYPN member or to sign up for the event, visit www.MYPN.org.

Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta announces special Aldermanic and School Committee meetings

MANCHESTER (May 5, 2008) – Mayor Frank Guinta announced there will be two meetings on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, to address the Board of School Committee’s budget appropriation for Fiscal Year 2009. The first meeting will be a joint meeting of both the Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the Board of School Committee and will begin at 5:30 p.m., with a separate special meeting of the Board of School Committee meeting to immediately follow. Both meeting will be held in the Aldermanic Chambers, One City Hall Plaza, Manchester.

The purpose of the first meeting will be a follow-up of the city’s Finance Committee meeting on April 14, when the school administration answered questions from the committee. The second meeting will be a work session to discuss the Mayor’s school budget for FY09 and a board vote on whether to authorize the superintendent to send out reduction in force notices.

“I believe we must continue the dialogue between all stakeholders,” Mayor Guinta said. “The school district will have $7.3 million less in revenue this year, so this will require creativity and proactive thinking on behalf of everyone involved. This is a solutions-based process that will provide cost-savings that will spare taxpayers while still meeting the obligations of our students.”
