Elizabeth Edwards, Honorary NH Young Democrat

First Annual John and Robert F. Kennedy Awards Reception to Feature Edwards, Honor Mike Vlacich and Raise Funds for NH Young Democrats

CONCORD, NH - On October 26, Elizabeth Edwards will join the NH Young Democrats (NHYD) for their First Annual John and Robert F. Kennedy Awards Reception at the IBEW Hall in Concord. Elizabeth Edwards, an attorney, activist and wife of presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John Edwards, will give her thoughts on involving young people and advancing progressive values in 2008.

“We are honored that Elizabeth Edwards accepted our invitation to speak at our inaugural event,” says Garth Corriveau, Treasurer of the NHYDs and co-chair of the event. “Elizabeth is an inspiration to many people, and I think it’s great that our members will have the opportunity to meet her and have a conversation about what matters to young people in the Granite State.”

The newly created “C. Arthur Soucy NHYD Lifetime Achievement Award” will be presented to Mike Vlacich, state director of economic development at DRED, former deputy chief of staff and campaign manager for Gov. Lynch, former NH Democratic Party executive director and Young Democrat. The “John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Young Democrat of the Year Award” will go to a deserving young Democrat in the state.

The cocktail reception is being hosted by the Merrimack County Democrats to help their younger counterparts raise funds that will go towards hosting the National 2007 Young Democrats of America (YDA) Fall Conference in Manchester in November. Over 300 young Democrats from across the country are expected to attend.

“We were eager to host this reception for the young Democrats,” says Rob Werner, chair of the Merrimack County Democrats. “They’ve been working hard to bring this conference to New Hampshire and show the rest of the country how exciting it is to be here. They don’t have the kind of money that their party elders do, so we felt it was our duty to help out.”

"It's great that the young Democrats are having this event, and honoring Mike Vlacich," adds Jen Kuzma, executive director of the NHDP. "Mike is an exemplary leader and I've learned a lot from him over the years. He has made it a priority to invest in young democrats around the state and for that we thank him."
