NH GOP Statement on Shaheen Candidacy

CONCORD – New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Fergus Cullen released the following statement on former Governor Jeanne Shaheen’s expected candidacy for US Senate:

“I respect Jeanne Shaheen, but she was a weak and ineffective governor. As governor, Jeanne Shaheen proposed a sales tax for New Hampshire. She failed to solve the education funding issue. State spending ratcheted up by double digits during her administration. As governor, Jeanne Shaheen was long on blue ribbon commissions and short on solutions. These were some of the reasons Shaheen was defeated for US Senate last time, and they continue to be strikes against her.”

“Shaheen also faces a primary this time, and she may discover that the New Hampshire Democratic party has changed since she was governor. The extreme left wing has taken over the New Hampshire Democratic party. Pragmatic centrists like Jim Craig are being purged in a party now dominated by left-wing extremists like Rep. Carol Shea-Porter. These leftwing activists will be interested in knowing whether Shaheen still supports the war like she did in 2002.”
