Washington, DC – Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement today in response to the testimony of General Petraeus:
“General Petraeus has loyally served our great nation and I am grateful for his service. I listened carefully and respectfully to his testimony today. He made the same comments today that he made in the Washington Post on September 26th, 2004.
“He wrote then: ‘Iraq's security forces are, however, developing steadily and they are in the fight. Momentum has gathered in recent months. With strong Iraqi leaders out front... this trend will continue.’
“His prediction was tragically wrong. There were no strong Iraqi leaders – just brave American troops. Today, General Petraeus said much the same thing. Three long years have passed since that statement, and we are now in our fifth year of this war. Thousands of courageous Americans have died, and thousands more have returned home with broken bodies or PTSD. American taxpayers pay at least $10 billion a month for this tragic war.
“We are still waiting for those strong Iraqi leaders, and we are still waiting for political reconciliation that has not happened. It is time to redeploy our troops in a responsible manner and go back to the real mission - hunting Osama bin Laden and other terrorists.”
As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Congresswoman Shea-Porter met with General Petraeus when she visited Iraq in March of this year.
