ASMR - STARR COBBLESTONE MEMORIAL GARDEN DEDICATION JUNE 10

On Sunday, June 10, the Keene Unitarian Universalist Church and AIDS
Services for the Monadnock Region will hold its annual dedication of the
Starr Memorial Garden, formerly known as the AIDS Cobblestone Memorial
Garden. The ceremony will be held after the morning service at 12:00 Noon
in the Garden, located by following the path that leads behind the church
sanctuary at 69 Washington Street, Keene, NH.

The combined missions of both organizations serve a common intention to be
open and affirming while exhibiting kindness, compassion and love to all who
seek solace. Cobblestones for loved ones may be purchased at a suggested
donation of $50; sliding scale begins at $30. Inscription is 3 lines and 36
characters including spaces. Email with engraving text no later than June 1
to susan.macneil@asmronline.org.

The AIDS Cobblestone Memorial Garden was originally dedicated by ASMR on the
corner of Spruce and Carroll Streets in September 2000. The Garden was
created as a way to remember the lives of individuals who have died from
AIDS, and the medical and spiritual caregivers who worked to make a
difference in their lives. In 2003 cobblestones were removed for safety
reasons.

As a welcoming congregation, the UU Church aligned itself naturally with
AIDS Services. Relocation of the Garden in 2007 announced a collaborative
partnership to create a contemplative sacred space. The name was changed to
the Starr Memorial Garden to reflect agency/church collaboration, honoring
Unitarian minister Deane Starr who died from AIDS on November 6, 1996. His
son, Paul, died from AIDS in 1992.

The Keene Unitarian Universalist Church is a welcoming congregation that has
served the Keene community since 1824. 603-352-1719, www.keeneuuchurch.org

AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region celebrates 23 years of serving people
living with HIV/AIDS in Cheshire County, southern Sullivan County and
western Hillsborough County. 603-357-6855, www.asmronline.org Funded, in

ASMR - MAY IS NATIONAL HEPATITIS AWARENESS MONTH

Viral hepatitis was originally referred to as the “silent epidemic” by
former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop because more than 4 million Americans
are living with Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C and up to 75% of these
individuals are unaware of their status.

People living with Hepatitis C (HCV) come from all walks of life and often
feel alone, ashamed and isolated. This illness results from a virus that
attacks the liver and decreases its ability to serve as the body’s filter
for toxins and other agents. Individuals with HCV can live for decades
without feeling ill effects from the virus, most often transmitted through
blood-to-blood contact that occurred decades ago but can eventually result
in problems due to chronic and/or undiagnosed HCV infection.

To understand the severity of the Hepatitis pandemic, largely ignored for
decades, comparison can be made to the AIDS pandemic. 1.4 million people in
the United States are living with HIV/AIDS and one-third of infected
individuals do not know their status. Federal funding is available to assist
HIV+ persons with life-stabilizing needs. In contrast, a support
infrastructure does not exist for people living with HCV.

The Centers for Disease Control has developed a 5-minute online risk
assessment that can be found at www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/riskassessment. This
private tool can provide a baseline for important follow-up conversations
with physicians. Many pharmaceutical companies have or are developing HCV
treatment options including Merck, Vertex and Gilead Sciences.

Locally, AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region (ASMR) assists persons
living with HCV by providing case management assistance and housing at The
Cleve Jones Wellness House. Contact the agency at 357-6855 or email
