ASMR - AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region Joins Lambda Legal in Support of Affordable Care Act

Gilsum, NH — Today, AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region joined over 130
HIV and healthcare advocacy organizations by endorsing Lambda Legal’s
friend-of-the-court brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as the ACA.
This brief supports the federal government’s position that the ACA’s minimum
coverage requirement (also known as the individual mandate) is
constitutional under the Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper
Clause. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments at the end of March.

In March of 2010, the ACA was signed into law, reforming aspects of the
private health insurance industry and expanding access to health insurance
for millions of Americans. The constitutionality of the law was immediately
challenged in federal court in multiple jurisdictions. In January 2012
Lambda Legal filed a friend-of-the-court brief highlighting the crucial link
between the ACA and the ability to curtail the domestic HIV/AIDS epidemic.
The United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in several cases
challenging the constitutionality of the law the week of March 26, 2012.

When the ACA was enacted, only 17% of Americans with HIV had private health
insurance. In the individual insurance market, people living with HIV are
generally considered “uninsurable” and are routinely rejected when they
apply for coverage because they have a pre-existing condition. Even when
these individuals find an insurance company to cover them, most states have
no rating limits, allowing insurers to charge prohibitively expensive
premiums. The ACA is designed to address this problem by eliminating
pre-existing condition exclusions and requiring that everyone acquire health
insurance.

“The list of supporters for our brief urging the Court to uphold the ACA
continues to grow because of the law’s enormous potential to impact the
domestic AIDS epidemic,” said Scott Schoettes, HIV Project Director for
Lambda Legal. “By signing on to the statement of support, organizations
across the nation have affirmed the demonstrable effect the ACA will have on
reducing rates of transmission and increasing prevention education, early
detection, and access to quality care for everyone living with HIV.”

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full
recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender
people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public
policy work. To read the complete list of organizations that have signed
the statement of support, visit

ASMR - KEENE STATE COLLEGE REDFERN ARTS CENTER ANNOUNCES READING OF "8"

KEENE, N.H. – The night before the vote will occur on HB 437, which is the
bill to repeal marriage equality in NH, the Redfern Arts Center at Keene
State College will produce a staged reading of “8." Dustin Lance Black, the
Academy Award winning screenwriter of the film Milk and J. Edgar, took 3600
pages of Prop 8 trial transcript and created a 90-minute production using
the actual words of trial participants.

A staged reading of “8” will be presented ONE NIGHT ONLY on Tuesday, March
20 at 7 p.m. in the Redfern’s Main Theatre. There will be a pre-show
reception in the Redfern lobby at 6 p.m. and a brief post-show discussion
following the reading. Admission is free, but tickets are required. For
tickets, contact the Box Office at 603-358-2168 or e-mail
boxoffice@keene.edu. For more information, visit www.keene.edu/racbp.

Black, who in addition to Milk penned the critically-acclaimed film J.
Edgar, based “8” on the actual words of the trial transcripts, first-hand
observations of the courtroom drama and interviews with the plaintiffs and
their families.

“People need to witness what happened in the Proposition 8 trial, if for no
other reason than to see inequality and discrimination unequivocally
rejected in a court of law where truth and facts matter,” said Black, a
founding board member of AFER, which brought the lawsuit to overturn
Proposition 8.

On February 7, the federal appeals court ruling that upheld Proposition 8
was determined to be unconstitutional because it deprives gay and lesbian
couples of the equal right to wed. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals
decision pushed the gay marriage issue a step closer to the U.S. Supreme
Court because Proposition 8 backers are expected to continue legal
challenges. Here in New Hampshire, legislators are considering repealing the
state’s same-sex marriage law enacted in 2009.

Shannon Mayers is producing and acting in the staged reading, directed by
Keene State theatre faculty member PeggyRae Johnson. They have chosen a cast
of 21 talented actors from the college and community including Catherine
Beherns, Dan Bullard, Kim Dupuis, Will Howell, Chris Kelly, Matt Kohler,
Anne-Marie Mallon, Jessica Montville, Darragh O’Brien, Ryan Ouellette, Dan
Patterson, Forrest Seymour, Ashley Simeone, Kimberly Sollows, Chelsea Tuffy,
Susie Ericson West, Vaughn West, Doug Wilcox and Don Wilmeth.

“8” had a much-heralded Broadway world premiere on September 19 at the
sold-out Eugene O’Neill Theatre in New York City. Its West Coast premiere
was held on Saturday, March 3, in Los Angeles where the cast included George
Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen and Christine Lahit. It was directed by
AFER founding board member and acclaimed actor and director, Rob Reiner.

The Redfern Arts Center is producing “8” with license from AFER and Broadway
Impact, a non-profit organization of theatre artists and fans mobilized in
support of marriage equality. The Keene State College production is
sponsored by the Redfern Arts Center, the Department of Theatre and Dance,
the Campus Commission on Diversity and Multiculturalism, Monadnock Live Free
and Equal, and Standing Up for New Hampshire Families.

NEW HAMPSHIRE READINGS OF DUSTIN LANCE BLACK’S NEW PLAY “8”
by Academy Award-Winning Screenwriter of Milk, J. Edgar

[Keene, NH] – The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway
Impact are proud to announce five, one-night-only readings of “8” across New
Hampshire beginning February 7 at UNH and concluding March 20 at Keene State
College. “8” chronicles the historic federal constitutional trial and
challenge to California’s Proposition 8, written by AFER Founding Board
Member and Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black.

Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film Milk and the
critically-acclaimed film J. Edgar, based “8” on the actual words of the
trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and
interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

“8” is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry
v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by AFER to overturn
Proposition 8 which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental
right to marry when it was struck down by the Federal District Court in
August 2010. That ruling was appealed to the United States Court of Appeals
for the Ninth Circuit by the anti-marriage proponents of Proposition 8.
AFER's legal team was at the Ninth Circuit in December 2011 for a hearing to
urge that court to unseal the trial video. The American public was not
given a chance to witness the historic trial because the Proponents launched
a desperate attempt to forever hide the video recording of the trial.

“8” had its much-heralded Broadway world premiere on September 19, 2011, at
the sold-out Eugene O’Neill Theatre in New York City. The production
brought in over one million dollars to support AFER’s efforts to achieve
full federal marriage equality. The play is set for multi-city performances
in 2012, including an all-star performance in Los Angeles on March 3, 2012
featuring Academy Award-winner George Clooney.

“People need to witness what happened in the Proposition 8 trial, if for no
other reason than to see inequality and discrimination unequivocally
rejected in a court of law where truth and facts matter,” said AFER Founding
Board Member Dustin Lance Black. “The goal of ‘8’ is to show the world that
marriage equality is a basic constitutional right. The facts are on our side
and truth always finds the light. AFER and Broadway Impact are doing all we
can to help speed that process along.”

In addition to its Broadway and Los Angeles productions, AFER and Broadway
Impact are licensing “8” to colleges and community theatres nationwide in
order to spur action, dialogue and understanding. AFER and Broadway Impact
are helping produce these staged readings across the country, which includes
a talk-back panel after each performance.

A ruling on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 and the release of the
trial video is expected soon. The Perry case is widely anticipated to end
up in the United States Supreme Court.

ASMR - SEPARATE BUT EQUAL IS NEVER EQUAL! EQUALITY RALLY TONIGHT, KEENE

LET'S SHOW NH THAT WE CARE ABOUT EQUALITY!

JOIN THE RALLY FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN KEENE ON TUESDAY!

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY EQUALITY RALLY HELD IN THE STATE.

Keene, NH - On January 10th, at 6pm, the evening of the Republican Presidential Primary, loving
and committed couples, faith leaders, families and straight allies will
gather on Central Square in Keene to stand up for all NH families, asking
the NH Legislature to vote no on HB437, the repeal of Marriage Equality, so that the rights and protections of marriage will remain in place for same-sex couples.

The Monadnock Live Free and Equal Coalition will host a rally focusing on
equality prior to the vote on HB 437, the bill that seeks to repeal the
popular Marriage Equality Law of 2009 and discriminate against current and
future gay and lesbian couples. The group is calling upon Republican and
Democratic Representatives to not pass a law that would allow for direct
discrimination based solely upon sexual orientation.

The bill is scheduled to be heard on either January 11 or January 18 by the
NH House of Representatives.  A majority of NH Republican leadership in the
House adamantly opposes equal rights for gay citizens.

Susan MacNeil, Executive Director of AIDS Services and Coalition organizer,
hopes for a large crowd.  “We have built a substantial base of supporters
over the last twelve months who believe that separate but equal is never
equal.  No doubt the evening will bring cold weather, but the fire for
equality always burns bright and demands action.  We expect to send a
message to NH legislators that we will not tolerate legislated
discrimination when it comes to equality for NH’s gay and lesbian citizens.”

Speakers, music and a candlelight vigil will be held from 6-8p in the
gazebo, downtown Keene
.   Participants are asked to wear purple and bring
rainbow flags. Candles will be provided. Organizing partners include the
United Church of Christ (UCC), PFLAG, St. James Episcopal Church and AIDS
Services for the Monadnock Region.  The UCC will open its doors to
participants for restroom facilities and serve as a warming station, ringing
the church bell at the head of the Square as a call to action.

The Coalition is a participating partner with the statewide organization,
Standing Up for NH Families.  For more information about the rally, visit
Monadnock Live Free and Equal on Facebook, visit the website at  http://monadnocklivefreeandequal.wordpress.com/ or call AIDS Services at
