AFPNH - Help Preserve New Hampshire's Competitve Advantage

As you know, the fight to preserve our competitive advantage over our neighboring states is an ongoing battle.

A lot of progress has been made in the past year, including:

1) State spending was reduced by 11%. It was done WITHOUT raising taxes, WITHOUT borrowing money and WITHOUT using budgeting gimmicks.

2) Small retail businesses on our state’s border saw a reduction in cigarette taxes, which helps them maintain their competitive advantage over retailers across the border.

3) Even the state’s business tax rate, ranked 50th,and the worst in the nation since 2007, improved to 46th this year.

Still, much more needs to be done.

This Wednesday, February 8, the New Hampshire House can continue in the right direction by passing HB 593, a bill to lower the tax burden on New Hampshire businesses, allowing employers to create jobs.

The bill will also permit casinos in New Hampshire. This will create thousands of jobs and bring hundreds of millions of dollars in non-taxpayer revenue to the state.

Studies have shown more than 60% of the revenue raised here would come from Massachusetts’ residents. That’s the competitive advantage New Hampshire has enjoyed for generations through retail sales, liquor sales and the state’s lottery.

If the bill fails, we will lose part of our advantage over Massachusetts - since they have moved forward with casino gambling.  They will be gaining revenue, economic development and jobs from New Hampshire.

We cannot lose our competitive advantage over Massachusetts.

I urge you to call your state representatives today. Please CLICK HERE to find your legislators and their contact information.

Non-taxpayer revenue raised in a responsible manner will help alleviate the burdens on our taxpayers and small business owners. In this economy, that help is needed now more than ever.

Please contact your State Representatives today!

Sincerely,

CORNERSTONE THANKS MA FOR ENDING CASINO DEBATE IN NH

Says Massachusetts Now Over-Saturating Market with Four New Casinos

MANCHESTER - This week, it was reported that legislative leaders in Massachusetts along with Governor Deval Patrick have reached an agreement to allow the construction of three new casino resorts and one ‘racino’ located throughout the state – including one just south of the New Hampshire boarder.   Legislative passage of the new casino facilities at this point is considered all but a formality.

In addition, the State of Maine has recently approved language to be placed on a ballot referendum this fall that would allow the construction of two new casinos in addition to the existing two already in that state.

Commenting on these developments was Cornerstone Action Executive Director, Kevin Smith:

“Once again, our neighbor to the south is leading the way in how not to grow an economy and improve the quality of life for its citizens.  At the same time, with Massachusetts now saturating the casino market with four new facilities, along with Maine considering adding two more casinos in addition to their existing two, it should be abundantly clear to lawmakers here that there is no market for casinos in New Hampshire – and the Granite State is better off for it.”

NetRight Daily: Judging Sotomayor and "Link" You Wednesday

Judging Sotomayor: Judge Sonia Sotomayor was rebuked on June 29 by the Supreme Court for how she handled the Ricci v. DeStefano case. Ricci thus presents an opportunity to examine whether Sotomayor, President Obama's nominee to the Court, has the requisite ability to recognize significant issues in cases.

"Link" You Wednesday: In our newest section on NRN, I like to take some time to thank those that help us cover the stories that we think are important. Please check this out and help spread NetRight Nation's message further!

Casinos: Coming to a State Near You?: With the current recession driving states to beg for handouts from the Obama Administration, some legislators will invariably begin to look at other areas for revenue. And some states will probably consider what could be called the "Nevada model."

State Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-VA) Discusses the 10th Amendment in Virginia: In this video, State Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-VA) discusses how the 10th amendment can be applied to some situations in Virginia. As well, he discusses the U.S. Senate and the importance of the office of Attorney General.
