The "Meese Effect" Ripples Throughout American Society and Jurisprudence
American Spectator - Jeffrey Lord argues that former Reagan Attorney General Edwin Meese's influence extends long after the Reagan administration ended.  Meese's (and Reagan's) insistence on appointing originalist, constitutionally minded judges is paying dividends even today in the effort to limit government's power.
Dick Morris Disses (But Misses) Virginia Tea Party Candidate for Senate, Jamie Radtke
American Thinker (blog) - Mark Fitzgibbons takes issue with Dick Morris's recent comment that tacitly compares Virginia candidate for Senate Jamie Radtke to Delaware's Christine O'Donnell. Fitzgibbons argues Radtke would be just the type of courageous limited government advocate that is so desperately needed in Washington.
Colorado State GOP Chairman Drops Re-election Bid, Saying He's "Tired of the Nuts"
Denver Post  - Dick Wadhams, who ran Senator George Allen's unsuccessful 2006 re-election campaign in Virginia and later was elected Colorado GOP State Chairman, dropped his bid for re-election against a conservative challenger. Wadhams, a close associate of Karl Rove, said he had the votes to prevail but wondered, "What happens after I win?"  He blasted those on the right who didn't understand that the GOP needed moderate votes to win statewide races.
Tea Party High Definition (HD) Producer Advancing the Cause from the Home Office
San Diego Union Tribune - Tony Loiacono is a California Tea Party supporter who's finding new ways to getting out the message, working right at home in the process. Loiacono knows first-hand the ill effects of too much government interference on business, and his video broadcasts (on Tea Party HD) are helping to spread the word that freedom is always the better alternative.
Palatine, Illinois Tea Party Shifts Focus to Local Politics
Chicago Daily Herald - Tea Parties across the country are focusing on local examples of big government excess. In the case of the Palatine Tea Party, they're turning their focus on ways to make local government more accountable, including demanding greater transparency and ensuring that good candidates run for local offices.

Indianapolis Star - Tea Partiers have let it be known that six-term Indiana GOP Sen. Richard Lugar would be a high-priority primary target in 2012, and now he's got his first official challenger in State Treasurer Richard Mourdock. Mourdock said he respects Lugar's service to his state and the country, but it's time for a change in the Senate.
Rhode Island State Rep. Doreen Costa is a Conservative Newcomer
Providence Journal - As America's Tea Parties start building a "bench" of conservative leaders for the future, here's a look at Rhode Island State Rep. Doreen Costa. Costa's only been in office a short time, but she's already made an impression by introducing bills to cut taxes and also vowing to cut deeply into her state's over-spending.
Florida Gov. Scott to Introduce Budget Proposal at Tea Party Rally
Orlando Sentinel - Florida Gov. Rick Scott fashioned himself as an outsider when he ran for office, and now he's continuing the trend in bypassing "normal" channels in introducing his state budget proposals. Scott will speak directly to the people in making his case, and the budget battles to come will no doubt further reveal his willingness to thwart the political establishment.
Ronald Reagan and NC Sen. Jesse Helms: An Odd GOP Couple
Charlotte Observer - As Americans commemorate Ronald Reagan's 100th birthday this year (his birthday was yesterday), it's important to remember that Reagan also had his critics on the Right. North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms was careful not to criticize Reagan directly, but let it be known that when Reagan stepped out of line with his base, that there were people ready to tell him.

Lee Edwards:  Reagan Prepared for the Presidency in the Political Wilderness
Washington Examiner - As we near the 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's birth (on February 6th), Reagan biographer Lee Edwards says Reagan looked at defeat in the 1976 Republican presidential race as an opportunity to prepare for his "rendezvous with destiny" in 1980. Rather than mope about his narrow loss to President Gerald Ford, Reagan saw it as a chance to educate himself further on issues and travel the world to establish his foreign policy credentials.

On Ronald Reagan's 100th Birthday, we Celebrate his Great Victory Over the Progressives
American Spectator - Professor Paul Kengor relays how Reagan woke up to progressive aims, then defeated them. It is perhaps not widely known that Reagan considered himself a FDR-Democrat/liberal until the late 40's, and was a first-hand witness to the slow creep of socialism at the time.  Reagan recognized the ideological shift and then led a life-long fight against it.

The Pledge to Nowhere Comes Back to Bite the GOP on the Bottom
RedState.com - Erick Erickson rips Republicans for their failure to keep a 2010 promise to cut $100 billion from this year's federal budget. Erickson notes that it's not a good sign for long-term reform when GOP leaders can't even reach their stated goal and wonders whether they've got the guts to do the real hard work of balancing the entire budget down the road.

Massachusetts Republican Thinks Some in GOP Are Compromising Principles
South Coast Today - Massachusetts conservative Linda Rapoza provides a lesson for other Republicans in her state, arguing that the grassroots will not be interested in working or voting for what they see as a liberal-lite attempt to get along with progressives. Rapoza concludes, "The time to take a meaningful stand for our constitutional republic is now."

Three Things to Think About When Running For Office
Majority in Mississippi - Tea Partiers' activism and newfound interest in politics has led many of them to consider running for office, and they'll need help to get them on the right track. Political consultant Howie Morgan has been involved in dozens of political campaigns and suggests that office-seekers get good advice from the beginning and listen to the voters.

Five Reasons Why Conservatives Can do Better Than Sen. Dick Lugar
Pajamas Media - Conservatives in Indiana have already declared that they will challenge Republican Sen. Dick Lugar in the 2012 primary, and Adam Graham presents his list of five good reasons why Lugar should be voted out.

CHQ - Opposition Mounts to State Power Grab Over Private Charities

(Vienna, Virginia)  The Free Speech Coalition, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization based in Vienna, Virginia and dedicated to protecting the First Amendment rights of nonprofit organizations, issued the following statement about its opposition to misguided efforts by state charity regulators to implement a model state law now called the Protection of Charitable Assets Act:

"The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) has sent a letter of opposition, signed by 47 organizations, urging termination of the drafting process of this misguided, unconstitutional legislation currently called the Protection of Charitable Assets Act (the "Act").

"As word has leaked out about the proposed new, redundant regulation of nonprofit organizations with more than $5,000 per year income, they are becoming alarmed and are beginning to organize opposition to the new proposed model state law.

"Especially during this time of economic duress in the nonprofit world, new registration fees and additional reporting requirements, which the Act would implement, would further drain scarce nonprofit resources, depriving legitimate charitable programs of those funds.  The Act would also add more bureaucracy for states to finance despite their already severe financial circumstances.

"The drafting committee relied on anecdotal reports from regulators, not testimony of the general public or nonprofits themselves, as there has been no professional analysis of the issues state regulators claim this Act would address.  FSC asserts that existing laws are sufficient and already overly burdensome.

"The Act would harm many small and local charities.  The Act also contains serious constitutional violations under the 1st, 4th, and 5th Amendments, and violations of the doctrines of separation of powers and checks and balances, that would harm all nonprofits, and are intolerable under any circumstances.

"FSC's opposition is also based in its experience dealing with state charity regulators who would administer the Act and have already demonstrated a propensity to overreach and abuse law-abiding nonprofits."

The FSC letter in opposition to the Act is available at
http://www.freespeechcoalition.org/pdfs/OCAA_ltr_2-1-11.pdf

The Uniform Law Conference Committee, whose members are appointed and are not elected officials, is responsible for drafting the Act (until recently called the Oversight of Charitable Assets Act).  They have held two meetings in Chicago, and a third meeting is this weekend.  A fourth, and presumably final, meeting is scheduled for July.

Gov. Chris Christie is Leading a National Seminar on the Politics of Tough Love
Washington Examiner - Mark Tapscott says New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is giving Americans the budgetary tough love they've been craving for a long time. Many conservatives are still unsure whether Christie's moves are driven by anything other than pragmatic fiscal reality, but there's no doubt that he puts on a good show for the YouTube audience.

Debt, Mayor's Power Have Tea Party Movement Brewing in Carmel, Indiana
Indianapolis Star - Contrary to the popular misconception perpetuated by the media, Tea Partiers aren't just concerned with federal matters in Congress, and the people of Carmel, Indiana amply demonstrate the point. Local Carmel Tea Partiers are keeping a close eye on what they see as their mayor's spending excesses and are seriously considering voting him out.

Rep. Danny Rehberg: Hello, I'm a Congressional Earmarkaholic
Washington Times - Montana Rep. Danny Rehberg comes clean on his earmark sickness and promises reform. Like any former addict, Rehberg candidly admits he was complicit in his own demise, voting for bad spending bills in order to save his pet projects.  Note: Rehberg is likely running for Senate in 2012, to challenge incumbent Democrat Jon Tester.

Conservative Ted Harvey Mounts Challenge for Colorado GOP State Chair
Colorado Statesman - The Tea Party grassroots is looking to reform the Republican Party from the inside, which has resulted in principled conservatives recently being elected to head state parties in New Hampshire, Washington, and Arizona. Following along those lines, Colorado appears to be another battleground for conservatives looking to lead a state party.

House Conservatives Push GOP Leaders to Cut the Federal Budget
Politico - The conservative House Republican Study Committee now boasts 170 members and is pushing GOP leaders hard on spending cuts. The RSC, led by Rep. Jim Jordan (of Ohio), sees its mission as working to ensure the most conservative legislation possible, and thus far they're doing a very good job of advancing the cause.
