DNC - On CNN, Laid Off Worker Says Romney Put Profit Over People

On CNN, Laid Off Worker Says Romney Put Profit Over People

This week, Randy Johnson, one of the many middle class workers who was laid off during Mitt Romney’s career as a corporate buyout specialist, is in Iowa to tell the real story about Romney’s career in the private sector.

“I really feel he didn’t care about the workers there,” Johnson said. “I mean, go back and look at some of the philosophies, look at the pattern. Everything was probably done very legal, done the right way. But it was all about profit over people.”

As CNN pointed out in a segment today on Johnson’s trip to Iowa and the Democratic strategy, this message will resonate with middle class voters this election.

GARY JOHNSON SENDS CNN A LETTER ON DEBATE EXCLUSION

October 17, 2011, Santa Fe, NM - In response to being excluded from the October 18th CNN debate Presidential candidate Gary Johnson sent CNN Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief Mr. Sam Fiest the following letter:

"Much has been said over the past several months about the mysterious logic by which CNN has systematically excluded me from your Republican presidential debates, apparently including the one to be held tomorrow evening in Las Vegas.

Commentators of all political stripes have pointed out the inconsistency by which other candidates are invited whose performance in national polls is within a point or two of mine, and whose records and credentials are in no way more substantive than that of a very successful two-term Republican governor from an overwhelmingly Democrat state.

The mystery of CNN's decisions reached an entirely new level when, after I outperformed both Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum in your own August poll, and tied Herman Cain, you inexplicably did not include me in your subsequent polling. And it is worth noting that those other candidates have spent millions of dollars in their campaigns, while I have not.

As evidenced by the volatility in this race, nationally-televised debates are clearly having a major impact on the nomination campaign. Given that reality, it is more than disturbing that major news outlets, such as CNN, are exerting their own influence into the process by what can only be viewed as arbitrary decisions as to who is on the stage - and who is not. Debates should provide a level playing field on which name ID and money spent are set aside, and candidates' "viability" is judged by voters on the basis of ideas and positions. However, when a successful former Republican governor is not even allowed onto that field, fairness goes out the window.

I will not speculate as to your reasoning for not allowing me on your stage. I will, though, suggest that there is no rational basis for excluding me, while inviting others whose credentials and polling performance are in no way measurably different than mine - particularly when the news media excludes me from the very same polls that are used to determine participation in debates. I would also point out, as have others, that with one or more invited candidates having decided not to participate in tomorrow night's debate, CNN presumably has room to include one more candidate - particularly when that candidate's credentials clearly merit inclusion.

This process is too important to be unduly influenced by arbitrary decisions made in news media conference rooms. I urge you to reconsider your approach and those decisions."

JOHNSON LEADS SANTORUM AND HUNTSMAN, TIES CAIN IN LATEST CNN POLL, BUT EXCLUDED FROM NBC/POLITICO DEBATE

August 29, 2011, SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- A nation-wide poll conducted August 24-25 and released Monday by CNN/ORC shows former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson is supported for the Republican presidential nomination by 2% of respondents, ahead of Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum and tied with Herman Cain.

Ron Nielson, senior advisor to Johnson, says these results show the fundamental unfairness of Johnson’s exclusion from next week’s Simi Valley debate sponsored by NBC, Politico and the Reagan Foundation.  Huntsman, Santorum and Cain have all been invited to participate, while Johnson is being excluded.

Nielson said, “This poll, conducted by credible organizations and more current than those used by NBC and Politico to choose who will be allowed on the stage in California next week, shows that it is ludicrous to exclude Gary Johnson, while inviting other candidates whose support appears to be no greater than his. Drawing arbitrary lines between polling results, when all of those results are within margins of error, and using those lines to determine who gets to take his or her message to the voters on a national stage if fundamentally wrong at this stage of the process.

“The voters are supposed to ‘narrow the field’ and pick the winners, not the national news media sitting around a conference room deciding that a candidate with a 4% poll showing is somehow more viable than one with 3%.

“Lacking the national recognition and financial resources of other candidates, Gary Johnson is building his support the old-fashioned way, and it is beginning to show.  He is out there every day, talking to voters, sharing his views, and earning support one voter at a time.  The national media’s refusal to acknowledge that support is getting tiresome, but we can and will overcome it, as this CNN/ORC poll indicates.”

NH Young Republican Chairman David Hurst Asks That Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson Be Included in the June 13th Debate

After learning that former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson was not invited to participate in the presidential debate scheduled June 13th at St. Anselm College, New Hampshire Young Republicans Chairman David Hurst issued the following statement:

“The decision to exclude Gary Johnson is completely out of step with the spirit of the New Hampshire primary. The New Hampshire Young Republicans do not endorse primary election candidates, but we do endorse an open political process that keeps New Hampshire special. Johnson is a former two-term governor with an impressive resume, and his ten visits to the Granite State demonstrate that he is serious about competing in our first-in-the-nation primary. We respectfully request that the debate partners -- CNN, WMUR, and the New Hampshire Union-Leader -- reconsider this decision and welcome Gov. Johnson to the June 13th debate.”

The New Hampshire Young Republicans are a proud coalition of men and women aimed at preserving Republican values in local, state and federal government. We are comprised of a broad network of students, young professionals, activists and elected officials from every corner of the Granite State. The mission of the New Hampshire Young Republican is to encourage more young people, ages 18 to 40, to become more involved in Republican politics in the Granite State.
