PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE GARY JOHNSON CALLS DADT CERTIFICATION "GOOD NEWS – BUT LONG OVERDUE"

July 22, 2011, Manchester, New Hampshire - Republican Presidential Candidate Gary Johnson today released a statement on the Pentagon’s certification of the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the U.S. military announcement of their preparedness to accept openly gay and lesbian service members, and that doing so will not harm military readiness.

“The Pentagon’s certification for the implementation of the repeal of DADT is good news –– but long overdue," Johnson said. "It should not have taken endless study and hand wringing for the United States to join many other nations in recognizing that our military need not discriminate against openly gay service men and women.”

"DADT is just one more example of the federal government trying to dictate the private lives of free people.  It's repeal is progress, but we have much more to do to get the government out of the business of discriminating on the basis of personal choices and lifestyles."

"As I have stated before if the Republican Party is going to capture the White House in 2012 we need to be the party that promotes freedom from government intervention into our personal lives.  Those who continue to promote discrimination and bigotry within the Republican Party in an attempt to pander to social conservatives will cost us the general election. Not only should Republicans be the party of efficient management of the pocket book, but we need to be the party of personal liberty and personal freedom."

NHDP Chair Ray Buckley's Statement the Presidents' Signing DADT Repeal into Law

Concord - New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley issued the following statement after attending the President's signing the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' in Washington DC this morning.

"Today, I watched as the promise of equality for all Americans, that was outlined by our founding fathers over 200 years ago, took an enormous leap forward with the repeal of the discriminatory 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy. The overwhelming majority of our men and women in uniform support the end of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' as do both the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the vast majority of New Hampshire and American citizens.

"President Obama's signature ended nearly two decades of LGBT Americans being forced to live a lie and serve the nation they love in secret.  Inequity and discrimination are fundamentally Un-American ideals and the repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' reaffirmed that they have no place in our country.

"I commend President Obama, Senator Shaheen, Congresswoman Shea-Porter, and Congressman Hodes for all of their hard work to bring this institutionalized discrimination to an end.  I also want to thank all of the men and women serving in uniform around the globe for their continued sacrifice."

NHDP Chair Ray Buckley's Statement on the Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Concord - New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley released the following statement applauding today's vote in the United State's Senate to repeal the discriminatory 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy.

"I commend Senator Shaheen and her colleagues for voting to repeal the ban preventing LGBT Americans from openly serving in the United States' armed forces.  The overwhelming majority of our men and women in uniform support the end of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' as does the vast majority of New Hampshire and American citizens, and both the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"Inequity and discrimination are fundamentally Un-American ideals and they are exactly what 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' has represented for the past 17 years.

"I also want to thank all of the men and women serving in uniform around the globe for their continued sacrifice."
