Guinta For Congress - Shea-Porter's National Energy Tax

ANOTHER INCREASE AT THE GAS PUMP FOR GRANITE STATERS

(Manchester – October 9, 2012) Granite Staters are hurting with the average price for a gallon of gasoline in New Hampshire at $3.85 and rising. On top of the fact that former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter has no energy plan to help reduce the pain at the gas pump, her record in Congress would only increase costs for Granite Staters.

In 2009, 44 Democrats voted “No” on Cap-and-Trade, also known as a National Energy Tax. Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter however sided with the extreme liberal members of her party and voted “Yea” to help pass this job crushing legislation through the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.

According to the Institute for Energy Research, a national energy tax would “would increase the cost of gasoline by anywhere from 60 percent to 144 percent and increase the cost of electricity by 77 to 129 percent" and according to another study, these Cap-and-Trade scheme “could cost 1.9 million jobs and slash the U.S. gross domestic product by up to $2.1 trillion.”

Derek Dufresne, Spokesman for Guinta for Congress released the following statement:

“Frank Guinta has been fighting for a true “all of the above” energy plan to lower costs for all Americans. In contrast, former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter’s abysmal record on energy issues speaks for itself. She would rather side with the extreme wing of her party than the hard-working Granite Staters who are paying more and more each day to fill-up their tanks.

“Carol Shea-Porter’s support of a job-killing national energy tax, which would add to already skyrocketing gas prices, shows that she has little concern for seniors and middle-class Americans who are struggling to heat their homes and drive to work.”

CARBON TAX...AGAIN?! - MARLO LEWIS

Globalwarming.org: More on the Carbon Tax Cabal

Concerning the “Price Carbon Campaign/Lame Duck Initiative” meeting of center-right and ‘progressive’ pols, wonks, and activists yesterday at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), herewith a few additional thoughts.

Today’s Greenwire quotes AEI economic policy director Kevin Hassett saying that AEI was just playing host and the meeting was just information sharing. Well, okay, let’s assume he experienced it that way, but what about the ‘progressives’ who set the agenda? They must really be into sharing, because this was their fifth meeting. Whatever the AEI folks thought the event was about, the agenda clearly outlines a strategy meeting to develop the PR/legislative campaign to promote and enact carbon taxes. > View the full commentary on Globalwarming.org

GOV'T WASTE - HANS BADER

Openmarket.org: $14 Billion More in Improper Government Payments

As CNN notes, federal and state governments overpaid unemployment benefits by $14 billion in 2011 — or approximately 11 percent of all benefits paid. The overpaid benefits went mostly to ineligible people, like those who had dropped out of the job hunt, quit voluntarily, or filed unemployment claims after returning to work.  Not only was there fraud on a vast scale, but governments completely failed to detect it. Indiana made more “improper payments” than proper ones. The only federal program with more improper payments than unemployment insurance was the  School Lunch Program. > Read the full commentary on Openmarket.org

AFPNH - Liberty Alert - Senate Amends RGGI and Liquid RGGI

This week the NH Senate voted to amend several bills that originated in the NH House including HB 1487, a bill to block Liquid RGGI, which I testified in support of earlier this year. HB 1487, as passed by the House, would prohibit NH from participating in any low carbon fuel standards program requiring quotas, caps, or mandates on fuels used for transportation, industrial purposes, or home heating. When it came before the NH Senate, a non-germane amendment was added to increase vital records fees which will now force the bill back into the legislative process.

Additionally, the Senate passed an amended version of HB 1490, which passed the House in March with a veto-proof majority and would have removed NH from the failed cap-and-trade scheme known as RGGI. This week, the NH Senate voted 18-6 in favor of an amended version of HB 1490, which among other items makes NH’s repeal of the program contingent upon similar action by one or two other states.

As you know, AFP-NH believes strongly in the merits of both bills as passed by the House. We will keep you posted on their status and let you know if any action needs to be taken.

Sincerely,

RNC - In NH, Obama Will Repeat 2008 Rhetoric About Increasing Energy Taxes

SHOT: In New Hampshire, Obama Will Repeat His 2008 Rhetoric About Increasing Energy Taxes:

In New Hampshire, Barack Obama Will Call For Increasing Energy Taxes. “President Obama intends to press lawmakers Thursday to quickly strip billions of dollars in oil industry tax breaks, remarks that will come during his second energy-themed speech in two weeks aimed at blunting GOP attacks over gasoline prices. Obama will speak Thursday afternoon at Nashua Community College in the swing state of New Hampshire. ‘In Nashua, the President will ... reiterate his call to repeal the unwarranted $4 billion in annual subsides handed out to oil and gas companies, and will urge Congress to take a vote on the repeal in the coming weeks,’ a White House official said ahead of Obama’s remarks.” (Ben Geman, “Amid Rising Gas Prices, Obama To Call For Vote On Killing Oil Tax Breaks,” The Hill, 3/1/12)

CHASER: In 2006, Obama Said It Was The “Easiest Thing In The World” To Criticize Oil Companies For Political Purposes:

Obama: “People want serious answers to these problems. If you’re going to talk about energy for example. The easiest thing in the world is to look at Exxon Mobil’s profits last quarter and say these folks are making $36 billion in one quarter, the CEO is making $500 million, and gas prices are high and we’re getting gouged. That may be sufficient because it does describe the degree to which the powerful have made out like bandits over the last several years. That may be sufficient to get us through this election, but after the election, people then are going to say, ok smart guy, what are we going to do about energy?” (C-SPAN’s “BookTV,” 10/20/06)

CHASER: Democrats Admit Increasing Energy Taxes Won’t Lower Gas Prices:

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) Said That The Democrats Attempt To Raise Energy Taxes “Will Not Reduce Gasoline Prices One Penny.” LANDRIEU: “But I would just like to add my strong voice to urging my colleagues to read this bill, to look at it, and understand the inherent unfairness in it, the lack of significant deficit reduction, and the fact that it will not, although it is being touted as, it will not reduce gasoline prices by one penny.” (Sen. Mary Landrieu, Remarks On The U.S. Senate Floor, Washington D.C., 5/11/11)

Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) Called On Fellow Democrats To “Stop The Headline Grabbing And Get Serious About Energy Security.” SEN. BEGICH: “Sadly, some of my colleagues in this body are not much better. Instead of addressing the problem with specific solutions, they are going for headlines by dragging energy company executives before committees or proposing that roadblock incentives for increased domestic energy production, some of which have been on the books for decade. Let's stop the headline grabbing and get serious about the energy security.” (Sen. Mark Begich, Remarks On The U.S. Senate Floor, Washington D.C., 5/11/11)

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY): This Was Never Intended To Talk About Lowering Prices.” (CNN’s “The Situation Room,” 5/11/11)

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV): “So This Is A Question Of Fairness And A Question Of Priorities. Certainly A Question Of Economics. But It Is Not A Question Of Gas Prices.” (Sen. Harry Reid, Remarks On The U.S. Senate Floor, Washington D.C., 5/16/11)

Sen. Max Bauchus (D-MT): “You Know, This Is Not Going To Change The Price At The Gasoline Pump. That’s Not The Issue.  I Don’t See That As An Issue At All. The Issue I See Is Who Shares.” (U.S. Senate, Remarks During Senate Finance Committee Hearing, 5/12/11)

Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI): “Nearly Every Independent Analyst And Even Some From The Oil Industry Itself Tells Us That This Proposal Will Not Alter The Economic Fundamentals That Determine Gasoline Prices.” (Sen. Carl Levin, Remarks On The U.S. Senate Floor, Washington D.C., 5/16/11)

AFPNH - As Expected Lynch Veto's RGGI Repeal

With the New Hampshire primary a mere seven months away, AFP-NH is working hard to ensure you have ample opportunities to meet with and speak to the presidential candidates. Plans are underway for an event in the Lakes Region later this summer that will feature several conservative members of the legislature as well as presidential candidates. The details of this event are currently being finalized but I will contact you as soon as we have them.

In legislative news, as I mentioned last week, Governor Lynch vetoed the Shoreland Protection Act, including the repeal of New Hampshire’s participation in the cap-and-tax scheme known as RGGI. While the General Court is out of session until August, the Speaker retains the right to call members for a vote as needed. AFP-NH will continue to monitor the fate of the RGGI repeal and keep you posted on any activities to override the Governor’s veto and how you can help!

Also, I am pleased to announce I will be speaking at the August Monthly Meeting of the Amherst GOP Committee on August 6 at 8AM at Joey’s Diner on Route 101A. I am always happy to be presented with the opportunity to engage with activists.  The best way for you or your group to make such a request is via the Speaking Request Program.

Finally, please take a look at the updated version of our Granite State Gatherings section.

I understand firsthand that summers are busy and the requests for your time are numerous. Thank you for your continuing support of our efforts.

Sincerely,
