CEI - Margaret Thatcher: A Defender of Liberty and an Inspiration

CEI Vice-President Iain Murray on the Legacy of the Former Prime Minister

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 8, 2013 — Iain Murray, vice-president of strategy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, native of the United Kingdom, graduate of Oxford and longtime expert on British politics and policy, had the following to say on the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher:

“She faced down socialists, communists and fascists alike in defense of liberty. She made mistakes, of course. What leader doesn’t? But she inspired me and countless others. The West was never stronger in its support for freedom, never more united in its outlook toward the world than when she and Ronald Reagan bestrode the national stage. And let us not forget how difficult – and unlikely – it was to break the greatest glass ceiling of all. Quite remarkable for a woman of such humble origin. For all she did, for all she gave the world and, especially, her homeland, thank you … and may she rest in peace.”

OurAmericanInitiative - We are ready to light the fuse

Friends,

Four states, four Live Free campus events, and I have good news to report: From what I have seen and heard this week, America’s young people are ready to enlist in the Liberty movement.

In Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri, hundreds of students turned out to Our America’s events, and they came loaded with great questions, great energy and an exciting desire to mobilize for smaller government and bigger freedom.  Next week, we go to New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah -- and I fully expect to see the same energy and excitement.

Why does it matter that these young people will take time away from exams and papers and fun to show up in an auditorium and talk about liberty?  It matters because America, as always, is changing.  It is changing as new attitudes, new faces and new understanding of the costs of a big, intrusive government begin to have an impact on the “system”.

Just this week, a Pew Poll showed, for the first time in their surveys, that a majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana.  Gallup, who has been asking Americans about legalization since 1969, when more than 80% of Americans opposed it, has found a similar shift.  On marriage equality, even members of that most stubborn institution, the U.S. Senate, are “evolving” at a steady pace, with even so-called conservatives expressing support for gay marriage.  That was unthinkable a few short years ago.

I personally don’t believe these are isolated issues.  As I travel the country, I am seeing these shifts as part of a larger recognition that individual freedom and liberty cannot be entrusted to the government. Young people, especially, see that -- regardless of personal opinions -- government cannot and should not choose which Americans enjoy individual rights.

Increasingly, they see that, if left to its own devices, government will produce the kind of hypocrisy that embraces alcohol use while criminalizing marijuana.  They understand that, if we let it, government will pry its way into every aspect of our personal lives, from our cell phones to our bank accounts to our computers.  And they understand that a national debt approaching $17 trillion is a greater threat to their futures than Iran or North Korea will ever be.

The Our America Initiative exists to give voice to these and other issues -- and to plant a flag around which Americans can rally on behalf of smaller government, greater liberty and real economic freedom.  Believe me, millions of Americans are ready to rally.  But they need leadership and they need organization to turn their attitudes into action.  That is precisely what the Our America Initiative is offering.

But...organizing a nationwide campus tour is no small task.  It takes time, it takes people, and yes, it takes money.  Posters and brochures have to be printed.  Radio ads have to be produced and placed.  News coverage has to be coordinated.  The same goes for our other activities, such as the Liberty Strategy Conference we are hosting in Salt Lake City next week and media tours to Washington DC and New York later this month.

Your support is critical.  If you haven’t, I wish you could join me at one of our campus events. You would see what I am seeing:  Liberty is a rocket just waiting to be ignited. Your contribution at Our America Initiative is the match that will light the fuse.

I hope I can count on your help.  With your financial support of the Our America Initiative, we can take the message of smaller government and greater freedom directly to the millions of Americans who are fed up with the status quo and ready to get to work changing it.

Have a great weekend, and stay tuned for more reports from the great events we will be hosting next week!

Thanks, as always, for your friendship and support.
.

Honorary Chairman

SEN RAND PAUL TO KEYNOTE FIRST ANNUAL NHGOP LIBERTY DINNER

Event Will Also Feature Special Guest RNC Chairman Reince Priebus

Concord - New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Jennifer Horn today announced that Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) will deliver the keynote address at the first annual NHGOP Liberty Dinner on May 20th. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus will also be a featured speaker at the event.

“Senator Rand Paul has been a leader in the fight for smaller government, lower taxes and fiscal responsibility in Washington. He has taken a strong and principled stand against intrusive government and fought to preserve our constitutional liberties and personal freedoms. I am honored that Senator Paul has agreed to address our party and I look forward to welcoming him to the Granite State.” said NHGOP Chairman Jennifer Horn. “I am also pleased to have Chairman Priebus visit New Hampshire to discuss his plan to reinvigorate and grow our Republican Party.”

General admission tickets for the dinner will cost $100 and will be available for sale at www.NHGOP.org.

Senator Paul was elected to the United States Senate in 2010 after a career in ophthalmology. He is a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine and he has three sons with his wife Kelly.

Reince Priebus was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee on January 14, 2011, and reelected on January 25, 2013, putting him on track to become only the seventh person to serve four years as Republican Party Chairman. In his first term as Chairman, Reince oversaw a dramatic turnaround of the RNC, rescuing its finances and rebuilding party operations.

NHDP - Ovide Lamontagne's Alleged "Freedom and Liberty" Doesn't Extend to Women's Health Care, Marriage Equality

CONCORD - Ovide Lamontagne's alleged support for "freedom and liberty" doesn't extend to women or gays and lesbians, Raymond Buckley, chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, pointed out in response to Lamontagne's first ad "Heart."

"A television ad won't erase Ovide Lamontagne's cold-hearted attitude toward stomping on the freedom and liberty of women and gays and lesbians," Buckley said. "Ovide Lamontagne has promised to aggressively work to repeal marriage equality. And Ovide Lamontagne is a strong believer in 'government intrusion' in women's health care. In fact, he supports a constitutional amendment that would make all abortion, even in the cases of rape and incest, a crime, and even outlaw some forms of birth control and fertility treatments."

Ovide Lamontagne told a rally this winter that as Governor he would aggressively work to repeal marriage equality.

As a candidate for U.S. Senate, Lamontagne supported a "Human Life Amendment" that would make all abortions a crime, and even make some forms of birth control and fertility treatments unconstitutional.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL CANDIDATE BURNS IDENTIFIES SIX-POINT PLEDGE TO HELP RESTORE LIBERTY MINDSET

Commissioners, Judges and Contracts Must Be Fully Examined To Ensure Limited and Accountable Government

BEDFORD, N.H.—Grounded in the fundamental principles needed to ensure limited and accountable state government, Executive Council District 4 candidate Bob Burns promises to stand firm on six campaign goals for the good of the people of New Hampshire and to persuade the governor and other executive councilors to do the same.

“The New Hampshire Executive Council was created to help make sure the governor and executive branch answer only to the people of this state and to ensure that our state maintains its tradition of low taxes, limited government and local control,” said Bob Burns, candidate for the District 4 Executive Councilor seat. “Many candidates will talk about civility and compromise during this election cycle, and I think these features are important, but not at the expense of accountability or principle. I owe it to the people of New Hampshire to stand on principle and devote my energy to the power of persuasion so I can change hearts and minds and advance the goals I am articulating today.”

Burns, who was recently endorsed by the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire and several notables devoted to the cause of liberty, is outlining his Executive Council agenda today embodying the same spirit.

Because each state commissioner serves a four-year term that outlasts the governor and executive council’s two-year terms, Burns first pledges to vet each candidate for commissioner to make sure his or her skill set matches the role he or she is employed to fill. Recent scandals involving the Commissioner of N.H. Employment Security, who resigned after defrauding the system to benefit her own daughter, and the N.H. State Liquor Commissioner’s inability to account for 300 missing cases of fine wine valued at $100,000, highlight the need for the executive council to examine job candidates’ qualifications ahead of time.

“For too long, we have been filling these coveted posts with an eye toward rewarding political friends and operatives mired in outdated and poorly controlled systems, and this must stop now,” Burns said. “There should be no tolerance for political patronage in this system. An appointee’s first loyalty should be to the people of New Hampshire and not to their party. I will interview each candidate with the full understanding that I am entrusting him or her with my own money and my constituents’ money.”

Equally important to vetting commissioners is an executive councilor’s role in confirming judicial appointments. In making appointments, Burns said he will only support judges with a strong understanding of both the U.S. and N.H. constitutions’ original construction and purpose.

“The recent Supreme Court ruling on Obamacare reminds us that judicial appointments matter. Whether it is an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court or to a court in New Hampshire, we need justices that will strictly interpret the Constitution,” Burns said. “New Hampshire deserves an executive councilor that will properly scrutinize judicial appointments and not just take the word of the good ole boys network.”

As part of the vetting process, Burns said he would look past the large Concord and Manchester lobbying and law firms to identify the best candidates from more humble sources. In making recommendations to the governor, it is important that these insiders are only considered after a more thorough search process has been undertaken, Burns said.

Additionally, Burns said he would focus on cleaning up problems within the family court system. Accounts identified by the House Redress of Grievances Committee about court officials improperly stripping parental rights from good parents must be addressed. Except in the most extreme cases, children are always better off with both of their parents, he said, and judges should make sure the family courts are doing everything they can to keep families together.

Finally, Burns pledges to carefully review all state leases and contracts to make sure the people are getting a market rate from their tenants and paying a fair price to their contractors for work that needs to be done. All contracts and leases should be open to public scrutiny so that competitors will have an opportunity to offer the state a better deal and the state’s citizen Legislature will have a chance to examine them and determine whether the business conducted by the state continues to make sense, Burns said.

It’s time to bring an end to excuses, such as ‘It’s a personnel matter’ or ‘It’s currently under investigation,’ when legislators, the media or the public ask questions about state contracts, leases or other matters of public importance,” Burns said. “These comments appear to cloak misdeeds in secrecy, and that’s not the impression our state government should be giving. Who is being protected by such secrecy? Certainly not the citizenry. As District 4 Executive Councilor, I will always call for sunshine in the back-door meeting rooms of state government to ensure our public officials are always accountable to the people they serve and the laws set by our State Legislature.”

Bob Burns' Six-Point Pledge

• Fully vet each candidate for state commissions to make sure his or her skill set matches the job.

Fully vet judicial candidates to make sure they strictly interpret the U.S. and N.H. constitutions.

Recommend judicial candidates outside the Concord/Manchester lobbyist- and law-firm clique.

Clean up the family courts.

• Review state contracts to make sure the people of New Hampshire are paying a fair price.

Review state leases to ensure the people are getting the market rate for their public properties.
