RightsEqualRights - NOM 2010 Tax Returns are Missing!

October 28, 2011

Mr. John Eastman
Chairman
National Organization for Marriage
2029 K Street NW, Suite 300
Washington, DC20006

Re:  Missing NOM Tax Returns

Dear Mr. Eastman:

I am writing to alert you that the 2010 federal tax returns (990’s) of the National Organization for Marriage are missing.  They were due in May 2011, and an extension was granted until October 15, 2011.  We stopped by your Washington, DC office this week and there were no 990’s available for viewing as required by law.  They are not up on your web site nor are they on Guidestar.

No IRS returns available again this year at the tiny national NOM office in Washington DC.

As the newly hired Chairman of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a distinguished law professor and a former law school dean, I had hoped that you came aboard NOM to perhaps try and give it some much needed honesty.

Who is NOM Trying to Protect?

NOM has not filed its tax returns on time with the Internal Revenue Service for both its 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations for any of the four years since it began.  I have had to visit your various NOM offices year after year to request them. Others and I have sent certified letters requesting your 990’s and have never received them.  I finally had to file multiple complaints with the IRS to force your organization to release its tax returns.

I have been the most prominent watchdog of the National Organization for Marriage since June of 2008, soon after it was established. I watched NOM grow from nothing just over three years ago, to an operation working in over half the states on each and every anti-gay legal and political battle.  NOM is also deeply involved in hundreds of state and federal candidate campaigns.  Additionally, all your federal lobbying and other activities in Washington, DC rival that of the Family Research Council.

NOM Under Active Investigation in Maine

As I am sure you are aware, NOM and its former officers are under investigation by the state of Maine for money laundering on a referendum NOM put on the ballot in November 2009.  The active investigation of the National Organization for Marriage by the State Ethics Commission and the State Attorney General is in its third year.  I filed the original complaint and testified three times in Maine to make sure that the truth comes out.  Only then will we finally learn where all the millions and millions of dollars NOM brings in each year to its two organizations actually comes from.

You can't blame me for being suspicious, since NOM has sued 23 states to try and keep the names of all your funders secret.  It was, however, gratifying to see NOM lose its California case this week in federal court (the same case you subpoenaed http://californiansagainsthate.blogspot.com/2009/09/fred-karger-subpoenaed-by-nom.html me in).  CLICK HERE: http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_19159246

So, as NOM’s new Chairman, I am writing you in the hope that finally there may be a modicum of integrity at the National Organization for Marriage.  We hope that someone with your distinguished record will act in accordance with the law; unlike your predecessors Robby George and Maggie Gallagher.

We assume that you will promptly obey federal law and file and release both sets of tax returns.

I anxiously await your reply.

Best regards,

Karen Testerman - Values Voters Bus Tour Marriage Rally

 Greetings!

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum will speak at the marriage rally. Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is tentatively scheduled to speak.

In the coming weeks, the "Values Voter Bus" will travel to the swing states of Ohio and Missouri. Over the next year, the Values Voter Bus will travel through other battleground states, including North Carolina and Minnesota which have marriage amendments on their ballots.

Tony Perkins, president of FRC Action, made the following comments:
"Over the next year, the Values Voter Bus will travel the country registering voters and speaking to the views held by millions of American voters who are deeply concerned about issues impacting the family and the broader culture.

"We have invited the presidential candidates to join the 'Values Voter Bus Tour' so that they can speak directly to values voters about their plans to protect marriage, safeguard religious liberty, protect the rights of the unborn and restore fiscal sanity.

"The presidential race remains fluid in part because values voters have a good selection of candidates who understand that the three cords of conservatism - social, fiscal and defense - are intertwined and will work to strengthen them.

"The President recently said that this election 'is a contest of values.' I couldn't agree more. It is about values, and whose values will guide our nation into the future. President Obama's values are clear - marriage, life and the Constitution mean little to him in the pursuit of his radical agenda.

"While values voters may rally behind different primary candidates, they are united in the belief that President Obama must be a one-term President. This President must be replaced if we hope to make America militarily strong and secure, economically prosperous and free, and socially healthy and virtuous," concluded Perkins.

CORNERSTONE COMMENTS ON SUB-COMMITTEE VOTE TO RESTORE TRADITIONAL DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE IN NH

CONCORD - Today, by a vote of 3-1, a Judiciary sub-committee voted to recommend passage of HB437, which would repeal same-sex marriage in the state and restore the definition of marriage to one-man and one-woman.  The amended bill also provides a civil unions provision for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples, as well as allows any existing same-sex marriages to remain legally intact should HB437 become law.

Commenting on this action by the sub-committee was Cornerstone's Executive Director, Kevin Smith:

“We think that the amendment passed by the sub-committee today represents a common-sense compromise to what has been a very divisive issue over the last three years.  We are hopeful that this amended bill will enjoy bi-partisan support and is a solution that both sides can live with.”

First Principles NH - Urgent Marriage Gala Alert

Greetings!

IMPORTANT URGENT ALERT!!!  PLEASE SHARE!

Sadly, due to circumstances beyond our control, First Principles is postponing the Marriage Gala to Friday, April 27, 2012.  Thank you to all who have registered and sponsored the event.  Someone will be contacting you directly.  I am sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Please mark your calendars to save Friday, April 27, 2010 when we will celebrate and honor those couples who through their commitment and devotion to one another add so much to our communities, our state and our nation.

Help us build the Marriage Hall of Fame.  Marriage Hall of Famers have marriages that are 25 years or more in length.  These couples are our heros!  They are the building blocks of our society!  When a man and a woman get married and stay married they form a household.  These households are the economic units of our communities.  Isn't it interesting that "economy" is derived from the Greek word oikos for household.

According to researcher Patrick Fagan, "Government and survey data overwhelmingly document that married-parent households work, earn, and save at significantly higher rates than other family households as well as pay the lion share of all income taxes collected by the government. They also contribute to charity and volunteer at significantly higher rates, even when controlling for income, than do single or divorced households."

Marriage really does matter!

We look forward to seeing you on April 27, 2012.

Blessings,

Marriage Hall of Fame to Honor Couples Married 25 Years or More

On September 16, 2011, First Principles will be holding its inaugural event at the Crowne Plaza in Nashua.   First Principles will honor couples who have been married for 25 years or more at a gala event celebrating marriage, the foundational block of family and society.

Couples who have achieved this milestone are encouraged to contact Karen Testerman at

http://www.firstprinciplesnh.org for details on how to join the NH Marriage Hall of Fame.

This event is a fundraiser that will benefit the Tilton Veterans Home. Reservations are available at First Principles-Events

"Cultures and faiths have universally acknowledged marriage as the preferred way to promote healthy natural families for the benefit of society, not only currently but over thousands of years,"  said Karen Testerman, founder and CEO of First Principles.

"Throughout our country, over 67%  of Americans have voted to affirm constitutional marriage amendments defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.  31 states have passed such amendments," Testerman added.  "We admire and congratulate these couples for their devotion and commitment in achieving these major milestones."

First Principles, a NH nonprofit organization, promotes those truths that we hold to be self-evident.  The most fundamental of these truths is the value of the family, limited government and personal responsibility.
