A Special Memorial Day Message From Congressman Frank Guinta

A Special Memorial Day Message From Congressman Frank Guinta

Dear Fellow Granite Stater:

This is the last Monday in May. Many of you are off work, and will spend this holiday with your family and friends.

To some Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. But this day means much more to us here in New Hampshire. It carries a significance far greater than hosting cookouts and getting reacquainted with the swimming pool.

Granite Staters understand Americans are free to enjoy the pursuit of happiness because many thousands of men and women made the ultimate sacrifice. The very freedom we have to do whatever we choose on this day was paid for by those who gave “the last full measure of devotion.”

Many towns and communities are holding special Memorial Day ceremonies and parades today. I will be participating in three of them. I urge you to make time to attend your community’s observance.

If your town isn’t holding a special event, you can still observe the spirit of this holiday by thanking a military veteran for their service, or just taking a moment to silently remember all the heroes who nobly laid down their lives to defend our liberty.

And please be sure to also remember our brave Armed Forces members who are on duty this Memorial Day far from home.

I join with you and your family in honoring all that has been given by so many people, so we can continue to enjoy the blessings that come from living in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

With best wishes,

Congressman Frank Guinta

Maggie Hassan Statement on Memorial Day

MANCHESTER – Democratic candidate for Governor Maggie Hassan released the following statement on Memorial Day.

"From the battlefields of Lexington and Concord to Afghanistan and Iraq, brave men and women have given their lives to keep us safe and free. On this Memorial Day weekend, let us pause to remember the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and liberty. As the daughter of a World War II veteran, I know firsthand that our country has long been kept secure by the proud and selfless service of our citizen soldiers. That tradition continues today.

So on this Memorial Day, let us also thank and honor the brave men and women abroad and at home who are serving in our nation’s armed forces keep our country, state and communities safe.  We should all work to support their families and pray for their safe return."

Ten Things We Should Have Remembered on Memorial Day
According to Yale historian David Blight, Memorial Day (first called Decoration Day), the U.S. holiday commemorating fallen soldiers, got its start at the end of the Civil War
In 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina former African-American slaves exhumed Union soldiers from a mass grave on the site of Charleston's exclusive racetrack and buried them in individual graves, a ten-day project that ended in a day of celebration of the nation, peace, and freedom in which thousands of Charleston's black families gathered to decorate graves, pray, play games, and picnic. 135 years after the end of our Civil War, our nation is engaged in near civil wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which we had a part in starting and no plans for ending.
