NH GOP Overrides Veto to Pass Voter ID Bill

Concord, NH – New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Wayne MacDonald released the following statement after Republicans in the legislature added to their long-list of accomplishments a voter ID law that will better protect the integrity of our elections.

“I want to congratulate our Republican legislature on this important accomplishment that will go a long way toward ensuring that New Hampshire voters get a fair chance to exercise one of their most fundamental rights.  Protecting the integrity of our elections is critical, especially given our historic First-in-the-Nation role.  More than thirty states, both blue and red, already have voter ID requirements on the books, and today’s override vote will add the Granite State to that list.”

NHDP -Bill O'Brien, Legislative Republicans Give Millions Away to Big Tobacco/Tax Evaders

While Cutting Funding for Higher Ed, Health Care

CONCORD - Speaker Bill O'Brien and legislative Republicans have given millions in tax dollars away to big tobacco and tax evaders, while cutting funding for health care and education, said Collin Gately, spokesman for the New Hampshire Democratic Party.

"Speaker Bill O'Brien has corrupted the budget process by putting big tobacco and tax evaders ahead of the people of New Hampshire," Gately said. "Now we're starting to see the full cost."

O'Brien and legislative Republicans cut the tobacco tax by 10 cents. Now, tobacco revenues are already $17.5 million below last year. They also cut the number of state auditors by 30 percent. According to the latest state revenue report, audit revenues are 37 percent behind last year - a large reason why business taxes came in below expectations for the month.

"To pay for their tax giveaways, O'Brien and legislative Republicans cut funding for higher education by half, cut services for people with mental illnesses or developmental disabilities, and raised hospital taxes," Gately said. "It's time for leadership that will put the people of New Hampshire before tobacco companies and tax evaders."

Republicans built their budget with a $14 million shortfall for fiscal year 2012. New Hampshire also faces a revenue shortfall from hospitals challenging a Republican leadership tax increase.

NH Republicans Comment on ObamaCare's 2nd Anniversary

As Friday Marks Two Years Since the President Signed Health Reform Law, The List of Problems Continues to Grow

Concord, NH – Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of President Barack Obama signing into law his government takeover of healthcare.  In advance of this “celebration,” top New Hampshire Republicans released the statements below as Granite State families face the reality that this initiative is dragging down our economy, is costing taxpayers more money and could force up to 20 million people to lose coverage.

“In the two years since President Obama's health care law was enacted, costs have increased, thousands of seniors have been forced out of their Medicare Advantage plans, and the economy has remained stagnant, thanks to the 2,000 pages of unknown mandates and cuts to Medicare that are reducing individuals' choices in their health care decisions and leaving employers hesitant to grow their businesses and hire new employees,” said Congressman Charlie Bass.  “I will continue fighting to repeal this law and keep politicians and bureaucrats in Washington out of the doctor's office.”

“Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said back in 2009 ‘…we have to pass the bill, so you can find out what's in it.’  Granite Staters have had two years now to examine the healthcare reform law’s details, and they don’t like what they see,” said Congressman Frank Guinta.  “Middle class families and small businesses will be hit particularly hard, because this law is too much: too much spending, too much government intrusion into your relationship with your family doctor, and too much red tape.  It’s a bad idea that delivers bad policy.  I’m committed to continue working to repeal the healthcare reform law and, if the Senate refuses to join the House in discarding it, to remove its most intrusive and egregious provisions one by one.”

“It has been two years since the passage of the so called ‘Affordable’ Care Act yet we still do not have a grasp on the true cost of the legislation, which the Congressional Budget Office just recently increased to $1.76 trillion over the next ten years.  Nor do we fully understand the effect that thousands of pages of new mandates and regulations will have on patients, health care professionals, or insurance providers here in New Hampshire and across the country,” said Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley.  “While the New Hampshire Senate has been focused on jump starting our state’s economy, we have been hamstrung by the as yet unknown impact of this intrusive, expensive, and unconstitutional federal mandate.  The time has come for clarity and finality on this issue and I look forward to the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the ACA later this year.

“ObamaCare’s 2nd anniversary represents two years of an unconstitutional intrusion into the lives of American citizens,” said N.H. House Speaker Bill O’Brien.  “The disastrous overreach of requiring that our residents are forced to buy a product or face penalties or prison is antithetical to everything our nation stands for, and is a full-frontal assault on our liberty.  This law’s requirement that state taxpayers must now cover thousands of new individuals on Medicaid is a budget buster, and the $500 billion in Medicare cuts in ObamaCare means that our seniors will face rationing of health care.  Perversely, the increased mandates are driving up the cost of health insurance, which actually increases the number of uninsured.  The New Hampshire House has fought at every opportunity to block this terrible scheme, and we will continue to do so, and we strongly hope the U.S. Supreme Court throws ObamaCare out later this year.”

“The November elections will be a referendum on President Obama and his record over the last few years.  Whether it’s on the economy or his healthcare plan, voters clearly see that Obama is making matters worse,” said New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Wayne MacDonald.  “Despite promises, costs are rising, taxes are going up and people are being forced to change their coverage.  It’s a reminder to taxpayers everywhere that government is not the answer to our nation’s problems.”

Shea-Porter - Rep. Guinta More Exteme than NH House Republicans

New Hampshire-   Yesterday, the NH House voted 280-7 yesterday against creating a law that mandates teaching creationism. But Congressman Frank Guinta wants the United States Government to force the teaching of creationism. The Raymond Area Tea Party asked then federal candidate Mr. Guinta "Would you support a law that mandates teaching both creationism as well as evolution as theories in my public school science classes?" His typed answer-- "Yes I would."

Mr. Guinta then reassures his tea party supporters that parents of kids, cutting out the state and local governments, could make all of the other decisions, including diverting tax dollars for home-schooling.

Former Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, who is running for the NH-01 Congressional seat, released the following statement:

"Representative Frank Guinta is even more extremist and anti-science than the Republicans in Concord. He supports a law that gives the federal government the power to mandate teaching creationism. Because of these anti-science, anti-education and other anti-constituent positions, he was just ranked 31st most conservative out of 435 House members. Frank Guinta is just too extreme for New Hampshire."

Background:

12. Would you support a law that mandates teaching both creationism as well as evolution as theories in
my public school science classes?
