New Hampshire Business Leaders Support Ovide for Governor

"The candidate for governor that will bring the focus back to the economy"
Manchester, NH – The Ovide for Governor campaign today released the names of over 165 New Hampshire business owners and leaders supporting Ovide's campaign for governor because of his strong business background and detailed plan for growing the New Hampshire economy.

The business leaders coalition is comprised of owners with companies in nearly 70 New Hampshire cities and towns and all 10 New Hampshire counties.

Stephen Mills, the CEO of Ink Mill in Sanbornton, said: “In today’s political scene, too many candidates are focusing on social issues while our economy struggles.  I believe Ovide is the only candidate for governor that will bring the focus back to the economy, help bring manufacturing back to the nation and more specifically New Hampshire.  A pro-business Governor would bring much needed employment opportunities to the state.  Manufacturing creates wealth.”

"I support Ovide because as a business owner himself, he understands how to meet a payroll and balance a real budget.  He knows that tax after tax on our state's businesses are not the way to economic prosperity," said Joanne Devine, the owner of the Rose Group, an assisted living facility in New Boston.  "Moreover, I found Sen. Hassan's comments in last evening's debate, saying that simply because Ovide owns a businesses he is a lobbyist, offensive to all business owners and shows how out of touch she is with the businesses small and large here in New Hampshire."

“I am honored by the support we’ve received from New Hampshire’s business community,” said Ovide Lamontagne.  “From the start of this campaign I have had the privilege of visiting dozens of New Hampshire businesses and have heard from owners and employees alike about how we can work together to get our economy moving.  My Prosperity Agenda is a comprehensive plan for how we reform government reduce taxes and regulation, and attract good, high paying jobs here in New Hampshire.  I look forward to working with these business leaders and others to enact this agenda as Governor and get our economy growing again.

Lamontagne For Governor - Maggie's Taxes of the Day: #63 & 64

Manchester, NH – In a tough 2009 economy, the last thing New Hampshire needed was a tax hike on meals and rooms driving tourists away.  But that’s exactly the sort of counterproductive measure Maggie Hassan supported as a State Senator, and has said she would support again if elected governor.  Her votes to raise the Meals and Rooms tax and to establish a Meals and Rooms operator’s license fee are “Maggie’s Taxes of the Day” for November 2, 2012.

Tourism is one of the Granite State’s most important revenue sources, and we need to maintain competitive pricing to attract visitors when we have Maine and Vermont to either side competing for every dollar.  Sen. Hassan’s vote to increase the Meals and Rooms tax from 8% to 9% did exactly the opposite, increase the costs of visiting the state for tourists as well as the cost of a night out for New Hampshire residents.

Further, at a tourism forum last month, Sen. Hassan said she was “open” to raising the Meal and Rooms tax another half-percentage point. [1]

Hassan’s Meal and Rooms tax increase followed a 2007 bill she supported establishing a new $5 license fee – yet another example of Sen. Hassan nickel and dime tax increase on the business owners of New Hampshire.

Background: As a State Senator,

Maggie Hassan SUPPORTED an increase in the Meals and Rooms tax (YEA on HB2, 6/24/09) as well as the creation of a Meals and Rooms operator’s license fee (YEA on HB599, 5/24/07).

[1]  When it comes to taxes that affect the tourism industry, Lamontagne was unequivocal in his promise to oppose any increase in the rooms and meals tax, gas tax or highway tolls. Hassan has said she was open to a conversation on those taxes … “I’m not going to support any raise in the rooms and meals tax above 9.5 percent,” she said.

Lamontagne For Governor - Democrats Across NH Support Ovide for Governor

Coalition lead by former State Senators Robert Preston and Bobby Stephen

Manchester, NH – The Ovide for Governor campaign today released the names of over 30 registered Democrats supporting Ovide for Governor.  The Democrats for Ovide coalition is lead by former State Senator Robert F. Preston of Hampton and former State Senator Bobby Stephen of Manchester.

Former Senate Minority Leader Preston said, "I am supporting Ovide for Governor because we need leaders who can bring us together to solve the real problems facing our state.”  Preston continued, “Neither party has cornered the market on good ideas and Ovide recognizes that.  He has built a successful career in the private and public sectors on his ability to work openly and collaboratively with anyone.  I am confident New Hampshire Democrats will have a seat at his table and that he will also be able to push back against some of the more extreme elements of his own party in order to craft policies that are right for the Granite State.  Ovide will bring experience, character, integrity, and conviction to the corner office, that is what New Hampshire needs in these challenging times.”

Other prominent Democrats for Ovide include former Merrimack County Treasurer Leo Bernier, Dr. Brian Gilchrist, former President of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital Nancy Formella, and Former Asst. Minority Leader Rick Newman.

Democrats in support of Ovide for Governor have also made their voices heard in the state’s newspapers as well.  “Life-long Democrat” Robert E. Fisher recently wrote in the Foster’s Daily Democrat he will be supporting Ovide for Governor on November 6th.

Early this month, former Assistant Minority Leader Rep. Rick Newman wrote in the Concord Monitor, “This year I am voting for Ovide Lamontagne for governor.  I do not agree with him on every issue, but I do agree that the last thing New Hampshire needs is new taxes on businesses or individuals. … We need a governor who will put jobs first.

“I continued to be humbled by the support we’ve received from voters of all political stripes across New Hampshire," said Ovide Lamontagne.  "During the primary I was criticized by my opponents for being too liberal, now I am being criticized by my opponents for being too conservative.  I believe the continued support this campaign has received from Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, and Republicans alike shows that the policies we are discussing are right for New Hampshire.  Together, we will reform state government, grow our economy, create good, new jobs, and reform state government, these are the issues a majority of New Hampshire voters are concerned about, no matter their party affiliation.”
