Seabrook - 3 citizen's petitions

Nearly 50 signatures were gathered for each of three different citizen's petitions for the March ballot over the course of a single weekend.

DASH CAMERAS (Seabrook):
For Seabrook, voters will be allowed to consider whether or not to use some of the funds in the D'Alessandro account to pay for dash cameras for all 14 police cruisers. Dash cams are becoming standard in state, county, and town police departments all over the country because they improve accountability and public opinion. Cameras also gather evidence for both civil and criminal trials while emergency responders are busy responding to calls for service. While they save money on trials and legal costs, their main benefit is their deterrence to those considering criminal acts in towns that have them. The original reasons, listed in the petition, include recording drunk drivers and drug addicts, compelling them to see their own behavior while drunk or high.

A campaign is being launched to support the measure: "Dash cams put scumbags behind bars"

POLITICAL ADVOCACY IN SCHOOLS (WHS):
A hotly contested article on the Winnacunnet ballot addresses the well known problem of teacher's unions using both public funds and public facilities for political campaigns and advocacy. While some school district employees are regularly seen holding signs for Democratic candidates on Election Day, fewer voters are aware of the behind the scenes electioneering, including calling known Democratic voters and targeting likely Democrats for voter registration. Nationwide, over $9 billion a year in tax dollars is funneled through "union dues" of public employees, mostly into Democratic campaigns. Nearly all Democratic legislators now return the favor by voting against school choice and supporting the NEA's very liberal policy agenda. Some teachers and textbooks even promote both liberal policies and cultural values in the schools, including environmental alarmism, multiculturalism, political correctness, and anti-gun hysteria.

The irony is that WHS faxed a copy of the petition itself with the words, "Democratic candidates" underlined to the NEA-NH, which has already organized an online effort to defeat the petition as "anti-education" and against "free speech."

SEPARATION OF THE SAU BUDGET (WHS):
Authorized by RSA 194-C:9b, voters in the Timberlane School District are also forwarding a similar measure after the School Board there cut teachers, assistants, and teaching hours, then used the savings for large pay raises for administrators. While it's unlikely that the Winnacunnet School Board would do this, the measure keeps everyone honest.

CEI Today: TSA body scanners - less than 5,000 petition signatures needed

TSA BODY SCANNERS - MARC SCRIBNER

CEI is involved in litigation to force the TSA to hear public comments and concerns about airport body scanners.  In a related effort, the Cato Institute's Jim Harper has launched a Whitehouse.gov petition to get the White House involved.  According to White House rules, 25,000 signatures are needed before Friday.

> Interview CEI transportation policy expert Marc Scribner about the lawsuit and petition drive

SIGN THE PETITION

We petition the obama administration to:

Require the Transportation Security Administration to Follow the Law!

In July 2011, a federal appeals court ruled that the Transportation Security Administration had to conduct a notice-and-comment rulemaking on its policy of using "Advanced Imaging Technology" for primary screening at airports. TSA was supposed to publish the policy in the Federal Register, take comments from the public, and justify its policy based on public input. The court told TSA to do all this "promptly." A year later, TSA has not even started that public process. Defying the court, the TSA has not satisfied public concerns about privacy, about costs and delays, security weaknesses, and the potential health effects of these machines. If the government is going to "body-scan" Americans at U.S. airports, President Obama should force the TSA to begin the public process the court ordered.

4701 signatures needed by August 09, 2012 to reach goal of 25,000

NH Democrats - ALEC: We Don’t Support Your Bill to End Medicare

Over 500 petition signatures against ALEC sponsored bill delivered today

Concord, NH - Today, Democratic lawmakers and New Hampshire citizens dropped off more than 500 petition signatures in opposition to HB1560 written by ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. Republican House Majority Leader DJ Bettencourt and Republican Senate Finance Chairman Chuck Morse have sponsored HB1560, which would end Medicare in New Hampshire. ALEC sponsored a presentation on Health Care in New Hampshire at the State House this morning.

"This bill is a reckless and irresponsible takeover of New Hampshire's Medicare program, said Representative Cindy Rosenwald of Nashua. "Turning Medicare into a voucher program where seniors have to purchase private health insurance would also put at risk what people like most about Medicare:  that they can continue their relationship with their own doctors.  If they have to choose doctors from within a carrier's network, they may possibly have to leave the doctor they have trusted for years.  That's not fair."

Instead of a stable, reliable Medicare plan, seniors would be subjected to a budget process every two years that could slash benefits and services at the whim of the state legislature. Under HB1560, the legislature also could choose to eliminate the Children's Health Insurance Program. This irresponsible bill would attempt to nullify federal law and put thousands of Granite State senior citizens and children at risk of losing health insurance and health care services.

"I am a Medicare beneficiary who is very satisfied with the program and the guaranteed health care services made available to me, even though I have a pre-existing condition.  Not only do I have access to medical care, I have the peace of mind knowing that the Medicare program affords me maximum choice of doctors and hospitals," said Joan Jacobs of Portsmouth in testimony before the House Constitutional Review and Statutory Recodification Committee.  "I paid payroll taxes to Medicare throughout my life as a wage earner.  I do not want my Medicare coverage terminated by the state of New Hampshire.  I repeat:  I do not want my Medicare coverage terminated by the state of New Hampshire."

"I believe HB1560 is an ill advised proposal that will bring chaos to the health delivery system here in New Hampshire.  It will bring uncertainty and anxiety to doctors and patients alike.  As a Medicare beneficiary myself, I find it alarming that lawmakers in our state legislature would want to take away a guaranteed benefit and replace it with a state block grant of diminishing value," continued Jacobs. "Even more astounding is the fact that the bill as proposed does not even require the redirected federal funds be used for health care."

"Hopefully testimony from Granite State citizens like Joan Jacobs and the cries of hundreds of New Hampshire residents who don't want to see Medicare ended will stop ALEC and the sponsors of this awful bill," added Rep. Rosenwald.

A group that fights the abusive influence of big labor on workers and businesses has taken to theWhite House's "We the People" petition website to urge him to rescind his recess appointments to the National Labor Relations Board, which took place when the Senate was not actually in recess.

"President Obama’s recent appointments to the National Labor Relations Board are unfair and unconstitutional," the petition, which comes from the Workforce Fairness Institute, reads. "He must rescind them immediately."

Though WFI does not expect Obama to change his mind, they hope to collect at least 25,000 signatures to “raise some noise and raise the stakes on his turf.”
