Plymouth - DeadPhish @ Flying Monkey 2/11

Jammin all night at DeadPhish:  The Flying Monkey on Saturday, Feb. 11th.

Plymouth, NH.  At 7:30pm on Saturday, February 11th The Flying Monkey is excited to have everybody get their groove on to the music of Jerry Garcia and Phish.   Cats Under the Stars is known for paying tribute to the often overlooked catalogue of the Jerry Garcia Band, and The Phreaks are known for taking their fans on a musical journey that harkens back to the good old days of Phish festivals. Tickets for this concert start at $10.

DeadPhish promises to be a musical journey that will bring you the full experience of festivals from the days of Peace, Love, Good Vibes and even better Jams, and the man that started it all, Jerry Garcia... along with the band that unofficially picked up the torch after he passed, Phish.

Cats Under the Stars bring you the tunes of the Jerry Garcia Band with authenticity. Their intentions, pure and simple, are to create good times, dancing, great music, and an experience you will not soon forget. As if that were not enough, in come The Phreaks… The Phreaks are an all-star cast of New England musicians celebrating the music of Phish. For years, the Phreaks have gained a reputation for delivering exciting and “phanatically” authentic performances. The band regularly recreates Phish shows and plays albums in their entirety.

The Flying Monkey Performance Center will remove several rows of seats for this show, so everybody can dance, jam, and get their groove on to a long night of awesome music, good vibes, and great times.
The former Plymouth Theatre on Main Street in Plymouth, NH, the funky, 1920’s era playhouse was renovated in 2010 and updated with all the modern amenities of today’s state of the art live entertainment venue. What was previously a two-screen movie theater has been converted into one intimate performance hall. State of the Art Sound and Lighting was installed by renowned acoustic engineer Bill Blaine.  The venue boasts a unique seating layout including cabaret style table sections and bars on both the main floor and the balcony. Reserved table seating offers both food and beverage service in the main hall during performances, starting as early as an hour and a half before showtime.

Tickets for the DeadPhish concert are on sale now for $10 & $15. For tickets and more information on concerts and the Flying Monkey Performance Center, visit www.flyingmonkeynh.com or call 603-536-2551.

============================================

NEW HAMPSHIRE READINGS OF DUSTIN LANCE BLACK’S NEW PLAY “8”
by Academy Award-Winning Screenwriter of Milk, J. Edgar

[Keene, NH] – The American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway
Impact are proud to announce five, one-night-only readings of “8” across New
Hampshire beginning February 7 at UNH and concluding March 20 at Keene State
College. “8” chronicles the historic federal constitutional trial and
challenge to California’s Proposition 8, written by AFER Founding Board
Member and Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black.

Black, who penned the Academy Award-winning feature film Milk and the
critically-acclaimed film J. Edgar, based “8” on the actual words of the
trial transcripts, first-hand observations of the courtroom drama and
interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.

“8” is an unprecedented account of the Federal District Court trial in Perry
v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by AFER to overturn
Proposition 8 which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental
right to marry when it was struck down by the Federal District Court in
August 2010. That ruling was appealed to the United States Court of Appeals
for the Ninth Circuit by the anti-marriage proponents of Proposition 8.
AFER's legal team was at the Ninth Circuit in December 2011 for a hearing to
urge that court to unseal the trial video. The American public was not
given a chance to witness the historic trial because the Proponents launched
a desperate attempt to forever hide the video recording of the trial.

“8” had its much-heralded Broadway world premiere on September 19, 2011, at
the sold-out Eugene O’Neill Theatre in New York City. The production
brought in over one million dollars to support AFER’s efforts to achieve
full federal marriage equality. The play is set for multi-city performances
in 2012, including an all-star performance in Los Angeles on March 3, 2012
featuring Academy Award-winner George Clooney.

“People need to witness what happened in the Proposition 8 trial, if for no
other reason than to see inequality and discrimination unequivocally
rejected in a court of law where truth and facts matter,” said AFER Founding
Board Member Dustin Lance Black. “The goal of ‘8’ is to show the world that
marriage equality is a basic constitutional right. The facts are on our side
and truth always finds the light. AFER and Broadway Impact are doing all we
can to help speed that process along.”

In addition to its Broadway and Los Angeles productions, AFER and Broadway
Impact are licensing “8” to colleges and community theatres nationwide in
order to spur action, dialogue and understanding. AFER and Broadway Impact
are helping produce these staged readings across the country, which includes
a talk-back panel after each performance.

A ruling on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 and the release of the
trial video is expected soon. The Perry case is widely anticipated to end
up in the United States Supreme Court.

Plymouth - Country/Bluegrass Icon Ricky Skaggs at Monkey: 02/04

Ricky Skaggs brings his Country Hits and Kentucky Bluegrass to the Flying Monkey on Saturday, Feb. 4th.

Plymouth, NH.  At 7:30pm on Saturday, February 4th The Flying Monkey is honored to present an evening with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.   Ricky has amassed 14 Grammys, 7 CMAs, and 12 IBMAs, over a dozen Country Hits, and is affectionately known as one of bluegrass music’s most recognized ambassadors.  Local country phenom Natalie Turgeon will open the evening.  Tickets for this concert start at $45.

Skaggs’ career is easily among the most significant in country music history.  If Skaggs’ burgeoning trophy case full of awards wasn’t already enough evidence of that fact, consider that legendary guitarist Chet Atkins once credited Skaggs with “single-handedly saving country music.”  Not one to rest on his laurels, Ricky Skaggs is now actively defining and re-shaping the direction of another indigenous American genre of music – bluegrass.

A life full of music, that’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age 21, he was already considered a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact. 2012 marks the 53rd year since Ricky struck his first chords on a mandolin, and this profoundly influential musician continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music.

A multi-talented country and bluegrass artist, Ricky is typically seen performing on a mandolin, he also plays fiddle, guitar, and banjo with his band, Kentucky Thunder. Skaggs has played with greats such as Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and Emmylou Harris.  Marking Ricky's 50th year in music is the release of Country Hits Bluegrass Style (2011), a compilation of many of Skaggs' #1 country hits and fan favorites, played in a bluegrass style. Combining his country and bluegrass roots along with Ricky's impeccable tenor voice, his eight time IBMA Instrumental Band of the Year, Kentucky Thunder, and some of Ricky's original award-winning country band alumni together with special friends add to the magic of this newest release.

“This group of guys meets my approval every night,” Ricky says of Kentucky Thunder. “Each and every one of the pickers in Kentucky Thunder totally amazes me in every show…and that, to me, outweighs any award we could ever win.”

This will be a rare opportunity to see this American Music Icon at the peak of his career.

Reserved table seating offers both food and beverage service in the main hall during performances, starting as early as an hour and a half before showtime.

Tickets for the Ricky Skaggs concert are on sale now for $45, and $55 for Premier seats. For tickets and more information on concerts and the Flying Monkey Performance Center, visit www.flyingmonkeynh.com or call 603-536-2551.

Stayworkplay.org - Stay Work Play and Governor Lynch Committed to Keeping 20-30 Year-Olds in NH

January 23, 2012 – Stay Work Play has partnered with New Hampshire Governor John Lynch and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation to host an event on January 26th aimed at partnering with organizations throughout the state to help retain and attract 20-30 year olds and encourage them to stay work and play in New Hampshire. Governor Lynch has sent out invitations to more than 50 organizations throughout the state to help Stay Work Play build their Board of Advisors, a coalition made up of small and large businesses and other organizations throughout New Hampshire with a focus on retaining our young educated workforce.

"As Governor, my top priority remains giving businesses the tools they need to be successful and create jobs. But in order to fill those jobs, we need to ensure New Hampshire continues to have a highly skilled and educated workforce," Governor Lynch said. "Our young people are vital to the future of our workforce and our state's economy. That's why I encourage businesses and organizations from across New Hampshire to partnerwith Stay Work Play so that we can keep the creativity and talents of more of our young people here in New Hampshire."

New Hampshire has a tradition of producing a highly skilled and educated workforce but NH’s population and workforce are aging. Meanwhile, many New Hampshire high school students attend college outside of New Hampshire, and many New Hampshire college graduates leave the state to seekemployment. Stay Work Play’s goal is to keep New Hampshire in the minds of young people as they consider employment and lifestyle options. Securing a young workforce is vital to New Hampshire’s economy, and Stay Work Play is leading the way in an effort to make our state more attractive to young workers.

As Michael Skelton, Corporate Communications at Public Service of New Hampshire, said, "Ensuring New Hampshire's business community continues to grow and thrive in large part depends on avibrant workforce. By encouraging young workers to remain in New Hampshire,Stay Work Play plays an important role in building the workforce of tomorrow.”

Stay Work Play is proud to invite business and community leaders from all over New Hampshire to learn more about their efforts and discuss how business, education, and government leaders can work collaboratively to support ongoing economic, workforce, and community development. This event will help kick-off a new phase for Stay Work Play and help better bridge the needs of our business community with the needs of our student population who are currently looking beyond New Hampshire’s borders for professional opportunities.

“At Dyn we equate Stay Work Play to the 21st Century equivalent of a travel and tourism bureau - a necessary institution for generation X and millennials to stay and be attracted to the state,” said Jeremy Hitchcock, CEO of Dyn. “The old NH Advantage where we hope that the world educates our students and that they move back to NH is an obsolete theory. Stay Work Play has been, and will continue to be, instrumental in Dyn's growth and success as a great place to work."

Please note that this event is by invitation only, but to find out more about the Stay Work Play Board of Advisors including how your organization may get involved, please visit http://stayworkplay.org/about-us/board-advisors or contact Executive Director, Kate Luczko, kate@stayworkplay.org, (603) 860-2245. Founding Stay Work Play Board of Advisors members include: Public Service of New Hampshire, University System of New Hampshire, New Hampshire College and University Council, New Hampshire Housing, Grappone Automotive Group, Sheehan Phinney Bass and Green, Campus Compact, New Hampshire Public Radio, Leadership New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, Cookson Stephens Corp, Dyn Inc. and Business New Hampshire Magazine.

About Stay Work Play: Stay Work Play is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 2009 to build off the work of the 55% Initiative, an effort originally launched by the University System of New Hampshire to help encourage more college students to stay work and play in the state after graduation. The effort gained additional support through the work of the Governor’s Task Force on Young Worker Recruitment and Retention, which recommended the creation of an independent organization to lead an effort to serve younger workers in the state and create a web portal that could servetheir informational and networking needs. Additional information on the organization can be found on the website, www.stayworkplay.org
