Republicans taking default off the table

The "Full Faith and Credit Act" will certainly avert default if the debt ceiling is reached, but Republicans also need to avoid the accusation that the debt ceiling fight throws Grandma off the fiscal cliff.

US House Republicans - VIDEO: “Your House" - Welcome to the United States Capitol

WASHINGTON – The House Republican Conference today released a new video featuring the architectural, historical, and artistic highlights Americans can experience on a tour of the U.S. Capitol.

The video, titled “Your House,” includes high-definition footage of the Capitol’s exterior, the Hall of Columns, Statuary Hall, and more.  You can watch the video here:

“Even though families traveling to Washington, D.C. are no longer able to visit the White House, the United States Capitol is still open for free, public tours for visitors,” said Chair McMorris Rodgers.  “It is unfortunate President Obama chose to eliminate public tours of the White House as a result of his sequester – arbitrary across-the-board spending cuts – instead of government waste, but we are proud to keep the doors to the beautiful, historic U.S. Capitol open for all.”

The President’s decision to cut White House tours is a stark contrast to the philosophy the White House has always promoted.  In fact, on the White House website, First Lady, Michelle Obama wrote, “The White House . . . is the ‘People’s House.’  It’s a place that is steeped in history, but it’s also a place where everyone should feel welcome.  And that's why my husband and I have made it our mission to open up the house to as many people as we can.”

While the White House has closed its doors to the public, the U.S. Capitol remains open.  Tours of the Capitol can be scheduled by clicking here or contacting your Member of Congress here.

US Rep Shea-Porter Statement on the House Republican Budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Once again, House Republicans released a budget that protects the wealthiest, hurts the middle class and puts our economic recovery at risk. Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter released the following statement today about the Republican budget:

“I’m disappointed that instead of taking this opportunity to work towards a balanced plan to reduce the deficit and create jobs, House Republicans chose more of the same: tax cuts for a wealthy few while asking for more sacrifice from the middle class.

“The Republican budget would turn Medicare into a voucher program – ending guaranteed coverage for future retirees. It would repeal Obamacare, an effort that amounts to little more than political grandstanding. And it would give Americans at the top a new round of tax cuts while asking students, seniors and the middle class to foot the bill. These ideas were debated over the course of the fall election, and they were rejected by Granite State voters.

“If the Republican House majority truly wants to compromise, they need to put forward a compromise budget.”

Rove beware: UK uprising a warning to Republicans across the pond

The UK Independents are poised to shove the Conservative Party to the side and assume the role of loyal opposition.  If the establishment continues with its attacks on the base of the GOP, Republicans could find themselves in the same position as the Tories.

The campaign against free and fair elections

The elections are only a few months behind us, but Democrats are already busy working to ensure citizens and non-citizens, the dead, felons and those registered in two or more states can cast a ballot in the next political contests.
